This leads to several characters' fears coming to life (beyond their control, and hell, most aren't even aware of this happening, they think it's people going crazy). The idea is that humanity is not ready for what could be a glorious gift because we are unable to control ourselves, and would ultimately destroy ourselves with it, despite the best intentions.

I read it then but a good damn long time ago, and I remember being disappointed with the ending.

I liked his other novels including the Jurassic Park Novels, Andromeda strain, The Great Train Robbery, and that book about some radicals causing earthquakes,.
