Q: What's the difference between a Pop Tart and a victim of the Black Death?
A: One stays in the oven for only 30 seconds.

The poor quality of the joke aside, does this offend you? The Black Death has killed more than any military superpower could even imagine; like an unfeeling thresher to the grains of human life, it uprooted entire civilizations and had only been surpassed in mortality ratio by the Spanish flu. With that in mind, if this joke were funny, would you laugh? Would you call me a heartless bastard? Does the fact that it afflicted Europeans in general as opposed to Jews make it any less worse, or is it that such a specific race as "Jew" is more offensive as it hits closer to home for some people. There's also the factor of time (or "too soon"), but how long is long enough?

I'm more curious than anything.

I hate all of my fellow man equally. So I would laugh if I found it funny.

Meh, it wasn't funny.
But its not something I'd go ape over if i heard. It must be because I live in America, which didnt exist (the country) during the plague.
For most people, its just too far back into the past.
Im not sure how Europeans would react though....

Past event of little to no impact on myself have no offense to mean when taken lightly. If its something horrible like Dead Baby jokes, I can feel both sympathetic as well as humored by it. f something was to offend me, Id still resist playing into it, as most of the time, others are able to find some self amusement from it.

Ok... I have to say... If you take offense to a joke about an event that happened HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of years before you were even concieved, you either have no brain, or you have servere mental issues... I mean, come on! Why care so much about something that happened in the past if you, yourself, will never have to worry about it in the future? That's like black people (or African American, if you want to be politically correct) taking major offense to all white people for slavery, which they didn't even experience, nor did the ones they hate against have anything to with it. It doesn't make sense!

World = Nonsense Eek

Really it is true, I would have to blame the individualistic air that most people have, yet they will still seek to attach themselves to a certain sect of culture. Black people argue that they were oppressed, yet they seem to put down themselves more than it seems that white people put them down. I find more offense in a black person saying the N word to other black people, and even more to white people, than a racist joke made about black people, because they seem to enclose themselves in the stereotype that they take offense to.

I don't think a joke's relevance to today's world should impact how seriously we take it. Just because the Holocaust is more recent and there are still living Holocaust survivors doesn't mean it was any worse than the Bubonic Plague or slavery or whatever. Jokes are jokes. Some are in poor taste, and some aren't funny at all, but so long as you don't go intentionally stirring up hurt and pain in people's lives with them I think they're fine. Everything can be laughed at. People need to lighten up a little.

This is a thread about the Bubonic plague - Derimed - 2009-09-28

AIDS is more terrible than the bubonic plague. The bubonic plague is best compared with Ebola -- it can be stopped by a quarantine and good sanitary conditions. What is AIDS though? Afflicting a good part of Africa, and having no cure or education to stop it there, it is theoretically feasible that in a few decades each generation of Africa will live for 15 years at the most. Only the most fervent Klansman could think something like that as funny or a good thing.

So, why precisely are Klansmen or the Nazis worse than the bubonic plague? It's not just the Nazis, all Nazi-like entities in history are equally terrible, be in Genghis Khan, Idi Amin, Pol Pot, or Stalin. Is starving 30 million Ukrainians to death "worse" than Pol Pot declaring Year 0 and killing 1/4 of his own country's population? Numbers at this point are not a "better/worse" thing. At the extremes of depravity, all depravity is the same.

Depravity is worse than plague because it is a conscious, willful act. It is a CHOICE made by the human mind. The plague is like a flood or a quake -- it does not think. It didn't choose to be the plague, and you cannot attribute human-like feelings, emotions, or motives to it. Humans can be so attributed, wherein lies the difference. The separation between depravity and civilization can be dated to exceedingly ancient times. Socrates in his dialogues made the clear distinction between people that obey the laws of society, and may perhaps be seen as boring or conventional for it, and people that reject those laws, choosing evil, which perpetually seems "rebellious," "modern," and "new." Fast forward to the Nazis, and it's still that same old Socratic dialogue, except now, the "rebellious, modern, new" people are wearing very trendy SS uniforms, having adventures in torch-lit parades, and listening to Hitler rallies, which were so carefully constructed that even Jews that got caught in them were carried away by the moment, like drops of water caught in the torrent of a raging river.

Therein lies the horror of it all -- the Nazis weren't killing Jews or Catholic priests. They were killing what those people represented. If you talk to scholars of modern European history, they will tell you that Hitler wanted to kill Judeo-Christian civilization and replace it with an overtly evil neo-pagan world view. The more you study the Nazis the more obvious it is. Himmler gave a speech before the SS, saying "praise be to what makes us hard," that is the more they rejected morality, the more "decent" fellows they became. Goebells made no secret about his openly dishonest and malignant propaganda methods, teaching his followers to repeat lies until they became truth, and to dehumanize their enemies as fleas and mice until killing the enemy became as easy as squashing vermin. Hitler made treaties with countries only to break them a week later, to the point where Chamberlain went to the Brits and promised "peace in our time" weeks before war broke out. The Nazis didn't incinerate Jews, they incinerated the Ten Commandments. Fast forward from that to now, where blond-haired blue-eyed immoral rich people riding around in trendy VW Beetles even in America are held to be something to admire, and that's when you have to wonder if Hitler even lost. And forgive me for not laughing at that, but that is something beyond the realm of /b/-tardism, because it is in serious fact the scariest fuucking thing about humanity -- the fundamental contradiction that exists in almost everybody, on the one hand driving us to build and create, and on the other hand driving us to kill and destroy.

No offense, Ryan, but comparing all that to a plague, an entity that has literally no inherent evil intent, is more than a little off the mark. And making fun of the Holocaust on Yom Kippur is somewhat like choosing Easter to release a ribaldly documentary on Christians being eaten by lions. It is beyond bad taste, it is beyond childish fun, it is fucking sick and disgusting. I can't tell people not to do it, because I read Socrates and I know people that choose to do it aren't ones to obey "Jewish slave-morality" anyway.

I agree with that and all but there is something far worse than AIDS: Humans. Humans have killed more people than AIDS, the Bubonic Plague, and Ebola COMBINED. We need to do something about those Humans before they kill all of the people in the world.

If you want to be responsible for your 25-year-old child murdering someone, be my guest.

I'm more curious as to why Prov made this thread in the funhouse in the first place. Not due to recent events, but wouldn't this be more suited for the Cube?

The human race is an adolescent child that doesn't want to follow Daddy, so they do their own thing and screw stuff up. Does that mean that Daddy caused the child to do the terrible things he does until death does he part? Don't think so. Daddy may be responsible for the kid's existence, but Daddy is not responsible for every reprehensible act the child does.
