Question Regarding Keyloggers - SuperNerd - 2009-09-19

This is the only place I could think to put this, so hopefully this is in the right area. If not, sorry.

So I use basil, like a lot of Maplers do. But mostly just for the auctions, I try to steer away from the forums, considering they house some of the most stupid, assholeish, disrespectful people I've ever seen. But I do sometimes read through a few threads if I need help on something or reading a guide.

As most people are aware, pricks have been messing with threads and the site so that you're redirected to a page that says you've been infected or something and it asks you to download a bunch of stuff to fix.

Unfortunately, I got that today. I did not download anything, and I did the "end task" thing with the Task Manager to close it down. I did 2 scans afterwards, with 2 different anti-virus applications and got rid of a lot of spyware, a trojan, and other stuff.

I'm afraid, though, that there would still be a keylogger stored somewhere on my computer just waiting for me to sign onto Maple so they can get my account info.

Here's my big question: can keyloggers be put on your computer if you DON'T download anything, or do you have to agree to download the program for the keylogger to be placed on your computer?

Since I didn't download any of the stuff it was telling me to, am I safe? I'm a bit frightened because I have had this account for 3 or so years and don't want to lose it in a split second.

I could swear yes, but everyone says no, so I guess no.

Well now I'm even more frightened. No one has been able to give me a straight answer at all.

I suppose I should start preparing 'farewells' to my account.

If you didn't download anything, chances are you're safe. Few sites are sophisticated enough to contain visit-only keyloggers, and most are dedicated to WoW and other, more profitable games. 2 different anti-virus software scans also covers for any gaps in either one of them, so I'd be willing to venture that you're fine. If you're really scared, you can reformat your computer, but that's a lot of work for an extremely low possibility.

Yeah, I suppose so.

Basically what happened was:

I clicked on a thread about Pirate gear, I was reading through it, when suddenly it redirected me to a page that looks like the "My Computer" page, saying that I got heavily infected with viruses and that I should scan and download an application to help. It freaked me out at first, but then I realized it was a fake, because I looked at my taskbar and the tab for the page still had the Firefox emblem next to the page name, obviously showing it was still on the internet in the Firefox browser. I tried to click 'Cancel' on some of the things it was asking me to do, but they'd just keep popping up. I would try exiting it out, and it wouldn't go away. So like I said above, I opened Task Manager and ended it with "End Task" and it finally was rid of.

While I didn't download or click anything but 'Cancel', in the time it was up, it still got plenty of spyware and a few viruses onto my computer, although those were cleaned up with the anti-viruses. So I'm hoping that the person who created it wasn't smart enough to create a "visit-only keylogger" for that page.
