bass guitar, or rhythm guitar, and why/what makes you say that?

Well, if they're like any other instrument, they're both equally difficult. Playing the piano and playing the trumpet are equally difficult, even though they're completely different instruments in the way they're played. A trumpet can be too hard for some, as you have to have very tough lips and have very good control over your lips to play it well, where the piano, you just have to have decent hands, but the physical requirement to play each instrument is of equal toll to each body part. Get what I'm saying?

A rhythm guitar (I don't really know anything at all about guitars) is the one in the main melody, right? That means the rhythm guitar would have to learn how to lead and keep the melody in pace, whereas the base guitar has an equally tough job keeping the harmony, making the rhythm guitar sound better. Both are equally difficult and equally important, as far as I know.

^^
well, a guy i used to work with had told me that it was harder to learn the bass, as, according to him, there are different ways of strumming the strings, whereas with the guitar theres less, comparatively.

Guitar and Bass are completely different instruments, and both can be played to an extent that it's really hard to learn.

A vid so you can see what I'm talking about:

That's a bass guitar, yeah. Both can be really difficult to master or even learn.

I think it's comparing apples to oranges.

You should play for which you prefer more, not for which is easier to learn.

yes, it more than likely was, and that was an awesome example of the bass being played. o-

EDIT::
@sicnarf: i wanted to learn how to play the bass more than the guitar because my own voice is rather low and has a very bass tone to it, especially when i stress that. 'course i also can mimic, kinda, that raspy tone used by heath ledger in portrayal of the joker in the dark knight. and, i wanted to learn how to play them first and foremost as a way to help me further my writing abilities (with my poetry, i try to be very picture-esque and detailed. glass angel is one good example of that, but whistling death, which i have up on SP, is another that comes to mind.
