Top left of Grendel's house is a stack of books. Mouse over it until you can click on it.

I actually think it's random where it is, because I found it at the bottom right.
If it says "Grendel is still in the magic library, I should come back later" It means there's another player in there for the quest already, so just keep jamming up or just watch for when they come out.
