Internet trouble - NumberCruncher - 2009-07-04
Okay, well about a week ago, my internet just stopped working (go figure, right after my sis gets off the computer). I get my internet free through wifi (lucky me), but anyways...something was blocking my access despite packets still going through.
We figured out it wasn't the internet cards I use (I use a linksys wireless G and a sprint card that is our roommate), so we ran every scan on the computer.
My uncle and I tried fixing it numerous ways, none of them successful. I thought it was a vista update that somehow had something, so I uninstalled. Tried loading an older backup, but I found out that the earliest one I had was just after the problem happened. Went to msconfig and disabled everything but the necessities, didn't work.
No viruses, malware, or anything that I could find.
Eventually we gave up and he's going to run some tests on my tower at his house, so he gave me a temp one that he has. It's not a problem anymore but I would like to know what caused it in the first place, so I don't have to deal with it again.
My sis is saying all she did was check her messageboards/forums, and all I did that day was check mine and play maple. If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated.
(If you need the specs, I can't get them off the top of my head, but I will ASAP)

So you guys do not have your own internet access, but get it from someone else's wifi? Have you checked for security settings, such as WEP?
What particular errors are you getting when you attempt to access the internet? It could be a DNS-related problem.

Yeah, that's how I get my internet. I would use the sprintcard, but its slower than the connection I can get through wifi. I checked all my security settings, and any that I might've missed, my uncle got through.
It was as if there was no connection, even though I could connect easily to all the different servers. "(Browser) could not display the page"
I'm not sure if its anymore helpful but IPv6 stuffs weren't located when this happened.

Its possible they blocked your IP specifically from the router, try it from another machine or try resetting your IP.

Connect to the wifi again and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar. If prompted for a username and password, type "admin" into the password and hit OK (yes, username is blank). This is the default login info for Linksys routers AFAIK. If this doesn't work, then it could mean what Deviant said, and/or they changed their security scheme.
Another thing to try is to go to 67.223.236.240. If this DOES work, then you aren't able to locate the DNS server. I'm never sure how to fix this type of problem, best way is to contact the ISP people and get it resolved (but since this isn't your internet, you probably shouldn't do that xD).
