Any site that wants you to "install" any sort of application, extension, plug-in, etc, is not safe.
Only the REAL ones from the official site are safe.

Well Trojans can hop onto your comp just from going to the site.

Getting anything bad from a site would depend on a lot of things.
1. What brower are you using?
2. Do you have all the recent patches for your computer and browser?
3. Did you notice something unusual about the website? (Popups that went away really fast, etc)
4. Do you have scripts enabled?
Now, there are a lot of other factors in getting something bad from a site, but I'm too lazy to go into detail with them. Most of the time, if you're using the latest version of Firefox, have Windows patched up, and the latest version of your Anti-Virus and you'll be safe from most attacks. The only way you can get something bad on your computer is if the site you visit has a specific script in the site which will exploit a hole in your browser (which only happens if your browser hasn't fixed the hole). Once they do that, the attacker can gain some control over your browser and they'll be able to download keyloggers, trojans, and all that other junk. But don't worry. It doesn't happen that often, and most of the time you'll be safe as long as you use your head when deciding what website you should visit.
To help you out a bit more, here are some Firefox Plugins to keep you safe next time. Use NoScript (which gives you control over which sites you allow to execute scripts), SiteAdvisor (which is sort of a baseline on what sites are safe or not, although it could be wrong), and WOT (a user based plugin which allows users to vote on which sites are safe and which aren't. They have a very nice community.)
Download those add-ons if you feel a bit paranoid. Hope this helps.

Uhh...yeah.
You might want to change your habits just to stay safe. Just run a virus scan and beef up your system. Firefox could eat IE any day.
