Very first for me was either Dragon Ball or Samurai Pizza Cats. I remember being around five and waking up at the ungodly hours of the morning to watch them with my brother.
Mai-Hime is what sucked me back into the anime world. I watched some fairly mediocre stuff before that, like DNAngel and Elfen Lied.

Anime is merely short for Japanese Animation. AKA, any shows produced / shown / aired in Japan.
It is a cartoon in the sense that it's marketed at younger kids and is animated, but that doesn't mean it's not anime.
I'm not totally sure if Thunder Cats would be considered anime... It was animated by a Japanese company, but its country of origin is here in America. I'd say it isn't though.[/SIZE]

Liked it when I was a kid but now I look down on it from the Naruto anime I've been watching.
