Salvaging a File - KajitiSouls - 2009-04-08

I'm trying to archive each version of MapleStory, and I'm having issues with Character.wz. (all previous file transfers didn't have any problems) It turns out that any attempt to copy it anywhere throws a CRC error, but copying it to NUL (via cmd) works fine. According to that website listed above, that's saying the HD is the culprit and that there's "bad sectors". I'm not sure if I believe that or not, but I tried to do what it suggested next, which was "xcopy /c", which is supposed to ignore errors, but it's still spitting the same garbage at me.
I've also tried defragging the HD in hopes that it would solve the problem, but no dice. And I've tried doing "chkdsk /r", which for some reason my laptop b!tches at me and says "You must run this utility at an elevated level." WTH! I'm the fking admin, don't tell me I don't have sufficient privileges! (unless it wants me to run it in safe mode or something) After doing a bunch of trial-and-error commands, I finally got one to go through without throwing an error, but it didn't work anyways. Whether it didn't actually execute or the chkdsk failed, I dunno (yes, I did reboot).
Spending money on software is not an option.
Any ways to get around this mtherfking problem before I patch to v.67? *goes off to fume*
EDIT: I resorted to coding my own fking file writer and did the best I could patching up the pieces I would copy. In the meantime, the directory the corrupt file is sitting in will now gather dust. If anyone has a v.66 Character.wz that's intact, please let me know, I would love to have it!

One thing that you could do to attempt and recover those bad sectors on your HDD, or C:\ drive rather, is run the error-checking utility that's included with your OS. Seeing the elevation error you received, I'll assume you're running some version of Windows Vista.

As for your other issue where your computer required you to have an elevated status/level to run chkdsk, all you need to do is right click cmd in the start menu or wherever you found it and:
- right click "cmd" -> navigate to and click "Run as Administrator"
Many commands in the prompt require you to do that should you come across it again. Kinda annoying, ya? *runs too many ipconfig's*
Hopefully that takes care of that problem.
As for 0.66's character.wz files, I do not have them, but if for some reason you can't patch, I'd be willing to send you my 0.67 files.

Another idea if you have errors that chkdsk can't resolve, is to find what brand of hard drive you have, and download a diagnostic utility from the manufacturer's web site. These are generally free tools that you will burn to a bootable CD so they can run without interference from anything else. They can do a thorough scan of the drive and let you know if there are current problems or any alarms about impending ones.

I could get a Global Character v066 pretty easily, just need to do a few installs. Considering the HDD space tho, why don't you just keep say v060, 65, 70 and the increment patches for each instead of every wz version? (60>61, 60>62... 65>66, 65>67, etc)
