Seems the "normal amount of time" is now 0.09 instead of 0.07.
About 30% slower for our host (in Canada, was it?), but I doubt you, in Britain, could feel the difference.

That logic seems backwards - The higher the latency the more visible it should be the further away you are, not the closer.

I think he means since im further away i already have latency so I wont notice the change? iuno either lol.

That depends on whether the difference is fixed or relative.
If they changed hardware or otherwise caused a fixed additional 0.02 sec to everyone's ping, then it would be much more noticeable to those who were at 0.07 (and changed to 0.09) then to those who were already at 0.15 (and changed to 0.17).

It's true that if they added 30% to everyone's latency, those who were already slow would suffer much worse, but I doubt Nexon's changing their equipment or routing could have that wide an effect.

I know it was predicted but once again NEXON SERVER MAINTENANCE has made things worse, how many weeks will it take for them to fix thier "fix".

GMS Server Status Discussion 2012-01 - Takebacker - 2011-12-05

I think you guys over-exaggerate how "bad" their network is. I literally feel no difference between now and a few months ago.

GMS Server Status Discussion 2012-01 - moore4me - 2011-12-05

I cant even log back on now, i crashed trying to switch characters. It did get better during your "break" Steve.

These server upgrades man, these server upgrades.

DAMN MAN I CALLED THAT.

Note for those who've asked; .09 will not be considered the "new normal" unless it remains the lowest average for over a week. Has to actually become the mode before being the accepted target.

So really it's just visible proof that they downgraded the servers and increased the overall latency, if it reaches the point where it is considered "green"?

No, it's visible proof that latency between Southperry and the various MapleStory servers has increased by .02 seconds.

It'd be virtually impossible to assign blame. It could be the path got one node longer. Or twenty nodes longer. How things route on the internet is mostly out of the control of any single company. Unless their specific hardware is explicitly delaying data transmission for some obscure reason the timing is outside their control. It could be something as simple as Southperry's host having applied new firewall rules or an ISP between Southperry and Nexon doing stateful packet inspection before they relay requests.

Sorry, I did not think that through. It's not really a defense, but, I haven't slept in 40-50 hours so I'm sort of starting to hallucinate. I should probably sleep. But I can't until a friend drops off his old graphics card at my house today at 4, or else I will sleep through it. Dammit.

Stateful packet inspection...shouldn't they have already been doing that for years, at least for the game servers? I mean, I know, "nexon", but wouldn't that be like the first thing they try in order to stop packet editing? Before going through the long and arduous process of repeatedly trying to make their game less client side, and failing miserably every time? I realize their servers would be under a ton more stress because of it, but at this point (more like, around the time cubes were released...) they should have been able to afford some servers that move quickly enough to process all of that extra data.

I guess it's possible that they are JUST NOW adding it, but have there been any reports of hacks no longer working since the patch last week? I don't keep track of that kind of thing, though I probably should. I know people are still BEING hacked, but that would be using a different "door" I'd assume.

GMS Server Status Discussion 2012-01 - Eos - 2011-12-06

I wasn't referring to Nexon doing it. Frankly Nexon is very unlikely to be doing packet inspection for the simple fact their games should be handling received packets, not an additional layer.

Run a traceroute to any destination.

Every hop on that list could be inspecting the traffic that passes through it, whether it's intended to 'end' there or not.
SPI is very resource intensive so it's not something likely to be "on" every node you pass through, but if you follow a consistent path for months and one node in that path suddenly starts inspecting packets it can increase the latency in a manner consistent to the sudden tiny increase we've seen.

GMS Server Status Discussion 2012-01 - Flonne - 2011-12-06

I just prefer Latale's network setup to Maplestory's. LT is almost entirely serversided, and is generally a very laggy game for people outside of California (noticeable amounts of lag for me, up to 2 seconds), but I GREATLY prefer a bit of lag to hackers. As of 2 years ago when I played, there was only ONE successful attempt to packet edit in the game recorded on video and ZERO people stating they had seen someone using hacks ingame besides that person, by anyone from any version or server, and that one single person was banned in 20 minutes; the server went down for an E-SC, and came back up with the hole patched. jLT was where that video was recorded, and it's a decent sized MMO over there.

I'll take a few lag deaths for support like that any day of the week. Hell, I would even pay a monthly subscription to MS, if it had that.

GMS Server Status Discussion 2012-01 - Eos - 2011-12-06

Yeah we've beat to the death the fact any MMO needs to be handled server side, not client side.

GMS Server Status Discussion 2012-01 - Daakun - 2011-12-06

And therein lies the reason behind all the new servers we don't need or want.
Since most stuff is handled client side, they can use cheapo servers with no significant upkeep costs.
