Why do we play Maplestory? - Thorr - 2014-04-28

It's funny to me that nobody is allowed to actually like playing the game. I like to play. That's all I need to keep going.

Haha right. I mean I don't play as much as I used too but I still find enjoyment from MS so I continue to play it. I don't regret any of the money I've spent over the past 8-9 years either. if it wasn't MS that money would have gone to some other form of entertainment.

Almost everyone here has said to keep playing if you enjoy it…it may confuse some people but to each their own.

No. That's the cop-out placed within the text. That's not the actual message. The actual message is that people are stupid if they enjoy it.

So yeah, to each their own.

People are stupid if they put up with the ridiculous abuse and limitations over something that offers very shallow and replaceable entertainment.

That's the message.

I wouldn't go that far - everyone has their reasons for continuing to play. It doesn't make them stupid or intelligent depending on their decision.

I don't know about anyone else, but it's not a cop-out when I say it. I think the real message is that some changes should have been made a long time ago and everyone is extremely disappointed that things have deteriorated as far as they have.

Niernen Wrote:I am aware of that. But it still shows some trends and can be used to determine if a company is doing well or not.

Looking at revenue of one company year to year and not comparing anything else is largely useless. If the rate expenses are growing at exceeds the rate revenues are growing at, you're going to run into problems if the trend continues, for example.

"oh no my expenses are going up SHUT DOWN EVERYTHING"

You can't make this judgment just by looking at expenses, so why would you say times are good just by looking at an increase in revenues?

Not to divert the conversation, but did anyone notice that Min Kim said he was in Seoul (or maybe still is) as of the 15th or so? He may be visiting family there, but my suspicion is that the trip is work-related.

Thoughts?

Why do we play Maplestory? - PeePeeAyeDeeKay - 2014-04-30

Social aspects for the most part nowadays.

Rarely do I actually work on a character of my own anymore. Usually I just get on to chat with friends more or less, maybe some events here & there if I feel like they're worth doing. If I bother to merch nowadays, it's mostly to fund friends. Else, I'm just doing other stuff or playing something else(TERA mostly).

Honestly, I'd have to blame Potentials(how it works & the amounts it outputs at least) for killing this game. It's extremely sad seeing a friend who has 1m+ range(self buffed), know what they're doing, and yet still can't solo an endgame boss easily. This game is definitely not too hard, if anything it's too easy (I've played since starting in 05 & Beta), but the amount of funding/cash reliance required nowadays to do much is just beyond absurd.

I woke up one day and said OH! I found my career path and quit maple to focus on it. LOL.. that one day changed my life. It took 6 years of doing nothing then one day in that split second it changed everything. WOOHOOO glad I quit =)

Why do we play Maplestory? - Words - 2014-05-02

Just like every addiction, you sure like it and of course you enjoy doing it despite how mindnumbing, pointless, punishing and destructive it is. That and the "fear" of quitting is what actually keeps people playing. Pointing out that you "just like it" isn't the whole picture.

SaptaZapta Wrote:I picked just this point out of your entire post because I am really sick and tired of people bringing this "at least I have a tangible item" thing up.

MapleStory is entertainment. Entertainment, by and large, does not leave you with anything tangible. Whether you pay $5 for a movie ticket, or $5000 for a cruise around the world, when the fun ends you have nothing but your memories. You can enjoy watching a ball game for an hour, or using a season pass to Disneyland for a whole year, but either way, when the fun ends, you have nothing but your memories. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with that.
Yes, there are hobbies and pastimes that leave you with something tangible for your time and money, but most entertainment is not like that. You pay to enjoy yourself for a time, and enjoy the memories thereafter.

So, just because the investment in Maple leaves you nothing but memories - and friends if you're lucky - is no reason to stop playing it.
If the enjoyment you derive from the game is not worth the money or time it requires, that's when you stop. Just as you decide whether to go to a concert by weighing how much you expect to enjoy it vs. how much the tickets cost.

Take it. Take it all. This pretty much sums up why to play anything really.

Also concerning the "tangible argument" BS. My sisters before complained to me that NX doesn't bring anything tangible which is why it's a waste of money, and that annoyed me to no end.

PeePeeAyeDeeKay Wrote:solo an endgame boss

imo, all the people wanting to do this killed the game even more than Potential. Potential was a decent idea on paper, but Craftsman/Meister Cubes should have been available right off the bat, and people shouldn't feel that they have to solo everything.

You don't NEED a 2m - 2m range and 300% Boss
You don't NEED to hit 50m/line on everything
You don't NEED 10t mesos across 5 accounts

Really, what was so bad about taking, say, a party of 6 moderately funded players and taking on an endgame boss?

Pretty much, or majority of them at least.

There is nothing that's actually bad about taking a group to an end game boss, unless you're hunting a specific drop perhaps or if they troll and get you kill or such. However, what's so bad is it hurts their ego/bragging rights. It's like how that saying goes, "You give them a taste(of power), they'll want more." I for one, my friend as well, would prefer to go with friends rather than just solo. I say my damage is pomegranate even with 2m ~ 2m range because one of the reason is that for a fact there will be more and more damage sources if this trend keeps up. I'm sure a lot of us here still expect a 5th potential tier after Legendary which is no surprise at all. While it is progression for an MMO, the difference is insane between F2P and P2W players.

Not only does this kill the game, but it causes psychological toxicity as well. Many are so full of themselves it's not even funny. I still remember back in the day(when it felt a lot more fun) where people would party up for bosses, 30 man Zak/HT on Vent. Community went downhill pretty hard since potentials if you ask me.

I disagree. What killed the game wasn't people wanting to do stuff alone or to be the very best, those exist in every game, but actually being capable to do so. Potential is to blame for the downfall of the game alongside with the destruction of the economy years ago, potential for expanding the limits of the strength cap in the game a hundred times than it was before and the game screwed economy for making leaving anywhere near the bottom of that cap extremely difficul. For example at lvl 200, with clean items whats the average damage any job could deal? I'd say around 100 - 200k per line. With potential that number grows to 40.000.000 to cap. See the absurdity in it? and because the economy is so messed up, most items one gets through the game are worthless while the ones one would want to get cost so much they had to expand the money cap of the game.

It is still possible to get money through the game indeed but as a payback for not spending NX one has to spend incredible amounts of time in exchange, and even then one has to spend at least a bit of money for it to even be possible because its absolutely necessary to have a mushroom store to sell in this game (reason for which Nexon doesn't add the auction house).

Why do we play Maplestory? - Alloy - 2014-05-04

Maplestory is simply a game where you have to have in mind that you will never get 100% of the things playing as normal.

Spend money to get everything, but the real beauty of the game kicks in when you ignore what you truly can't achieve without cash. The game is less, sure, but there's content you can still access without being funded. Party Quests, Commerci trades, events, chatting, quests, crafting...

Sure, it's not the same as paying for a shortcut, but the fact that you slowly build your character with each action is interesting, and if you see hard magnus, for example, as some kind of "legend" instead of an achievable goal, who knows, maybe you'll end up enjoying the rest of the game. And maybe even one day face him with chances.

For me? The reason why I just dropped maple was because I stopped having fun. It just ran dry.

It was around Unleashed, and I'm sure everyone remembers how horrid that patch was. Two attendance events ran at the same time (the ring and the actual killing of mobs). One offered a pretty decent ring. Another offered one of the only ways to obtain Unleashed coins. And the shop had some pretty lucrative rewards, so attendance was pretty much required if you wanted anything worth while. The problem? attendance hurt and it hurt bad. Everyday was just composed of:

1. Grab potion box from Gaga
2. Head to Temple of Time
3. Kill 300 mobs for around 15 minutes. Maps and by extension mobby maps were nearly impossible to come by in Scania
4. Hand in attendance and head back to Leafre
5. Afk for the remainder of the hour
6. Head back to Gaga and get a stamp for that day
7. Rinse and repeat for any additional character

This event spanned around 3 months. The whole summer was devoid of things to do, and yet it felt like a chore just to get on maple and preform these humdrum tasks. But the rewards were worth it to me... at the time, at least. I had to stay on top of it, because if you missed a day (or three for the ring), you lost everything. So Nexon used that to inflate their population for that summer. So after Unleashed... I realized.

This game isn't fun. It wants to make you believe it's fun, by making you think you're accomplishing more than what you really are.

Bosses were buffed. People were (and still are) pimentos. Prices were ridiculous. I didn't have a job at the time, and NX is nearly a requirement to play. Glitches happened, and they happened in abundance. Nexon slinked to fix them, and it took a lot to get their attention. Hell, if I recall correctly, people were dropping like flies because of all the false banning going on. I tried to prolong my experience... but it just really wasn't worth it. The charm of maple had run dry for me, and mid RED... I just dropped it entirely. I'd achieved what I'd set out to do, anyway (which was to reach level 200 on the character I began with).

The point of any game is to have fun. If a game is more busy work than actual fun, then why even bother? I have my memories of what I enjoyed, and that's all I'll ever need.

Why do we play Maplestory? - JohnnyArngrim - 2014-05-11

Maple is so NEEDY. It NEEDS you to play, way more than you need it. And nexon is well aware of that.

2x events practically every other weekend, can't miss out on those so why not stack up with a 2x card and stay a while? Oh and make sure you check in for attendance too! Don't want to miss out on any of those prizes.

New patches and gear always on the horizon ensures your gear becomes yesterday's news if you aren't ready to cube/gach a new set of equips all over again. And again in another months time.

Or maybe you haven't played in a while, just checking things out? Oh, you're leaving again? Wait!!--here's a special logout gift, just for you. Go on, take it. A free exp coupon, just in case you wanted to play a bit you know? No thanks are necessary.

The game uses every trick in its arsenal to dig its hooks in you with enticing rewards while also pressuring you to keep playing in fear that you'd miss out on something. Thats what kept me around for so long.
