Fitness thread - Throes - 2013-04-06

Confession time: I've only been running like twice since I first posted in this thread. I'm way too self-conscious to go out there alone! But I've been dancing my ass off in my living room, because pineapple people, and it's way more fun than running. Also I've discovered fitness mode in DC3 and it's been great for helping me stick to my regimen (now 3 times a week.)

I've been having the following smoothie for breakfast every day for the past month (+ multivitamin + vitamin D (for my deficiency) + omega 3 supplement) and it has done wonders for my energy levels, especially at work.

 insert recipe here

I'm trying to cut the Starbucks out of my morning routine, I'm down to 1-2 times a week from 4-5 times a week. It's been awesome! No more midday jitters or crashes, and my digestive system has never been happier.

This morning in addition to my DC3 workout I tried to use the hubby's perfect pushup thingies and... I did five whole pushups. How shameful! I'd like to have some more upper body strength but I don't want to look... overly muscular. Wat do?

Fitness thread - Sardines - 2013-04-06

Throes: Try doing high reps with free weights. If you can only do five push ups, try starting off with ten pound dumb bells and run through basic lifts. You'll get muscle tone, but you won't really gain muscle mass. Dancing sounds like a great cardio activity. Running is popular because it is simple, cheap, and people can get into a routine of doing it on a daily basis. Other than that, dancing is great for losing weight all around the body and isn't inferior to running, especially if you can't get into the habit of running every day.

Lift weights or look up a bodyweight fitness routine. I promise that you won't just accidentally get buff.

OK guys lemme tell you all a secret, I'm a fatty. So I really need to lose some weight. Good news is I love lifting weights and biking. Does anyone know a good weight routine that, combined with 30 minutes of cardio that will help me lose weight?

30 minutes of cardio + 1 hour of lifting legs (high reps).

Any type of lifting that you feel comfortable with should do the trick. Any lifting period should induce calorie consumption due to > metabolism.

update after a while of inactivity in this topic

my lifts haven't gone up that much, as I've been on a deficit for a long time now, but I've managed to drop 30lbs and went down 4 pants sizes!
I'm so happy. I'll be able to eat at maintenance in about a month, or even clean bulk!

Fitness thread - Throes - 2013-04-20

After two weeks I'm up to 10 whole pushups! (The real kind, not the girly knee kind.) Yea it's still pretty pathetic considering the shape I was in when I used to do taekwondo/judo/jujitsu, but whatever, huzzah for progress!

The hubby bought a dumbbell set and I've been commandeering it while he's at work. Just two and a half weeks before our trip to France, I'm so excited! I am a little bummed though that I don't see any real dramatic change in my physique or my weight considering I've been really good this month. Oh well, gonna keep it up and hopefully I'll see some differences in a month or two. Smile

Fitness thread - chrome - 2013-04-21

I'm gonna start running. Only lifting and not doing any cardio throws me off for some reason considering how much cardio I did like 2~3 years ago.

My leg is DOMSing so hard after that hike it could start a BDSM club.

Fitness thread - TrollHunter - 2013-04-26

Fitness has always been a thing I used to keep myself sane. When I still lived in the mountains I'd go for 4 hour hikes every other day out of boredom, and about 9 months ago I took up Shaolin Kung Fu.
This was probably the best decision of my entire life. Insane levels of stretching, working every muscle and conditioning every bone in your body, along with meditation and a solid mental workout too? Sign me up.
Taking this up has completely changed my lifestyle. I've become more welcoming to challenges, my self-confidence actually exists now, my balance and posture have greatly improved... and oh my god all the pwetty
weapons I get to play with.
My life basically revolves around this now and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Since I'm bored in China I've been going to the gym every other day. Everytime after my workout, I go in the Sauna for about 20-30 minutes(rinsing the sweat off three times). I've started to see some improvements in my physique. Sad this is I can't really eat healthier because real chinese food is very oily. But using the Sauna makes my skin so much better. How do you guys and gals feel about using the Sauna? Also, is it better to do one set of 75 at a lower weight or more sets of lower amounts at higher weights?

Before you guys ask questions, I recommend you read this website. It probably answers all of your questions. Also to get rid of most misconceptions that I get annoyed at, I'm going to pull some excerpts:

Quote:Women will not get big and bulky from lifting weights because they have very little testosterone. Conversely, lifting weights will actually help make women look more like supermodels. Elite natural lifters such as Jennifer Nicole Lee, Jamie Eason, and Marzia Prince are thin, lean, and "toned."

The lean but big, bulky women use steroids.
Quote:Depending on your goals, the weights you work with that affect the number of sets and repetitions will give you different results and body shapes, but will always improve your mental and physical health.

GOAL:StrengthMyofibrillar HypertrophySarcoplasmic HypertrophyEndurance

SETS:3–5 sets3–4 sets4–5 sets2–4 sets

Quote:Fats EDITOR'S NOTE: FAT DOES NOT MAKE YOU FAT OKAY THANKS

9 calories per gram.

The good: Most high fat foods contain an abundance of vitamins and minerals, as well as essential fatty acids that the body requires to function. It is also a very good source of body fuel and contributes to weight loss. Many crucial vitamins are fat soluble and are needed for bioabsorption, including vitamins A, D, E, and K.

The bad: The body needs an omega-3 and omega-6 ratio of 1:1 or 1:2. Most of us consume 1:15 or higher, which contributes to inflammation and oxidation in our bodies, leading to a host of critical diseases. Avoid products such as margarine, canola oil, and vegetable oil, and focus more on animal fats, eggs, fish, butter, avocados, coconut, and olive oil.

Fats are high in energy density, so take caution to only consume fats that are already part of the animal (beef, pork, chicken, fish) or with small amounts used for cooking. Frying or adding fat to a meal can signifcantly increase total calories.

And a few more things I would like to add (I am pretty annoyed today, I have a neighbor that does nothing but spread fitness magazine advice and it's getting to me):

- Protein powder: Not steroids. It is literally just milk protein in powder form. You mix it with things.
- Creatine: Not steroids. Small amounts are found in foods that contain L-carnitine, so red meat. It's actually good for you.
- Steroids: Illegal.
- Supplements in general: As long as you're not putting loads of them in a bowl and pouring milk on them, you're probably not going to die.

The highlight of my day so far:

DEADLIFT:

Thanks! And no, actually. I just got off track with everything for a week and I'm starting to take everything seriously again. I'm actually cutting (well sort of, like I said I got off track), which is why I'm doing 1x1 deadlifts instead of 3x5 on power days (less volume).

I ordered a new tub of whey too, but I had it shipped to a wrong address so I have to wait a week to get it. ._.

Intermittent Fasting + EC Stacking for the last two weeks and I'm down 16lbs.

Cutting for summertime/just trying to lose some excess weight. My back has been hurting for unknown reasons the past month and a half so my lifts are mostly all lightweights and more reps. I'm going to test it out in another week or two and see where I'm at pain wise after lifting and possibly consult a doctor depending on the result. Or I might just go to the doctor regardless. Few friends from high school posted about their medical conditions on facebook and it's made me overly paranoid the last two weeks or so. Lol.
