. . . gather his things and run into the labyrinth.

Driven to the edge by the surge of lost memories, the man hastily throws his possessions back into his bag and rushes deeper into the winding corridors. Turn after turn. He no longer has any sense of direction. His only goal is escape--not from the labyrinth, no, but from the pain inside his mind. Burning regret he can't understand, growing ever stronger. Every turn brings another flash of a life he can't remember. He screams and pushes himself harder. The crystals become thicker the deeper he goes. So numerous that their light now brightly illuminates the corridors. His insides start to burn, but he forces his legs forward. Another corner, and the man barely stops himself in time...

From becoming completely consumed.

Mere feet away, he stares over the edge into a massive chasm. In stark contrast to the brilliant crystals surrounding it, its never-ending darkness terrifies the man and brings him to his senses. The barrage of broken images slips from his mind as he stares into the void. He takes out his flashlight and shines it down inside, but the beam hardly penetrates it. Rather, the light seems to be devoured. None of the crystals dip into the expanse. Complete darkness, just like where it all started. He thinks back to the massive, dark and empty room he woke up in. But this is different...much different. Staring into the abyss, the man feels insignificant. Not lost or confused--inferiority. The void drains his confidence and leaves him with only the most raw form of fear, as if its darkness is literally sucking it from his body. His muscles relax and his mind empties.

In a trance, the man slowly walks closer to the edge. The void beckons. At the edge, stone stairs appear from the darkness. He doesn't know whether he simply did not see them before...of if they were summoned specially him. Winding down and out of sight, the stairs descend for eternity. His feet begin to pull him toward the stairs, but a sudden glimmer of red catches his eye, momentarily freeing him from the trance. Leading back into the labyrinth, some of the crystals glow a faint shade of red.

The light has an odd effect on him. Soothing, almost. Friendly and warm. Fear takes control again as the man realizes how close he has moved to the edge. He stops right at the top of the stairs, no more than a few steps from falling in. The darkness has an immense power over him. Taking his focus off of the red light for only a second, he can feel it reclaiming control of his body. The crystals seem to call to him like a good friend, while the darkness is much more akin to a vortex. With his last ounce of willpower, he . . .

A) Gives in and descends the stairs into the chasm.
B) Fights it and follows the red light.
C) Defies both and jumps into the chasm.

 INVENTORY

Kinda wanted seven for this one, but I'll go with five for the sake of REALLY wanting to get a second done today.

v Yes, lol

Shouldn't it be "A) Gives in and descends the stairs into the chasm."?

Also, C.

A Southperry Choose Your Own Adventure! [Story/Game] - Throes - 2011-05-30

A) Gives in and descends the stairs into the chasm.

A Southperry Choose Your Own Adventure! [Story/Game] - Salguod - 2011-05-30

A) Gives in and descends the stairs into the chasm.

I can't recall where I remember this from, but I have a very vivid image of what might happen if we picked C. Basically, you jump into the abyss and all you can see is more darkness. You become gripped with fear and despair as you keep falling and falling. Then the story ends and you return to the start menu. As for B, never trust seemingly friendly light.

B. Red lights are always friends right!?

A Southperry Choose Your Own Adventure! [Story/Game] - Panacea - 2011-05-30

A as well.

Above pretty much summed it up.

A Southperry Choose Your Own Adventure! [Story/Game] - Holypie - 2011-05-30

A) Gives in and descends the stairs into the chasm.

Woo! Even if we get a bad end we might learn more.

A Southperry Choose Your Own Adventure! [Story/Game] - Piggy 2.0 - 2011-05-30

C. Be a man.

A Southperry Choose Your Own Adventure! [Story/Game] - Rob - 2011-05-31

B.

;_;

4 A, 2 B and 2 C.

It's not my fault this time!

A Southperry Choose Your Own Adventure! [Story/Game] - MetaSeraphim - 2011-06-01

Your fault for having such a tough choice!

Anyway, I'll change to A.

. . . gives in and descends the stairs into the chasm.

The red light fades as he takes his first steps into the abyss. Letting go, the darkness easily grips his body and guides his legs down each stair. His flashlight barely illuminates two steps in front of him, but it does not matter. The man's body is no longer his own--it belongs to the void.

Deeper and deeper he descends. Hours pass. The darkness is so thick that it gnaws at his flesh. His sanity fades. Spectres pass in and out of reality all around him, their faces racked with grief. They call out to him, desperately, but he doesn't hear them. The past, his past...the past of those before him mourn every step he takes, unable to break his trance.

Days pass in the darkness. His skin is raw and bloody. His insides burn and struggle to maintain function. His sanity hangs by its final thread. His legs move completely separate from his body, under the power of another. The flashlight flickers, losing strength. All around him, within him, the visions grow increasingly bizarre. A young woman, cradling her baby, reaches out for him as he passes by. Two men fall past him from above, their bloodcurdling screams echoing in the endless chasm. And then silence. Distant crying. Broken conversations of love and regret. The darkness flashes its teeth, a wicked smile...

"Welcome, Derrick."

The man's legs suddenly reach the bottom. He nearly falls over from the unexpected end of the stairs. The rush of everything from his descent overwhelms his body, forcing him to his knees. His senses return to him. Pain hits him like a flood. His entire body is on the edge, and he fights to retain consciousness. He tries desperately to understand how this happened to him...and he remembers entering the chasm. Nothing seems real anymore.

In the darkness before him, several torches burst to life on pillars lining a massive hallway. Slowly, with an arrogant stride, a well-dressed man approaches him. The mysterious man laughs and begins gently clapping his hands. "Well done, well done. It's been ages since I've had any guests."

"W-...who...are you?" Derrick struggles to speak.

"Come now, don't strain yourself. We have a lot to discuss, you know. Let me help you." He extends his hand for Derrick, his eyes glittering with deceit. His face painted with a sinister grin.

. . .

---

A) Take the mysterious man's hand.
B) Try to get away.
C) Try to attack him.

 INVENTORY

[SPOILER=Author's comments]
Chapter 3 is gonna be starting sooner than expected because I honestly didn't think you guys would go into the chasm one way or another. Didn't think I'd even introduce this character until much later, but SURPRISE. The time is now.

And fyi, you've already avoided several (4-5?) DEAD ENDS. Of course, I've never put more than one among a selection. Considering the options I've presented, take that as you will.

Updates to INVENTORY.

First to five takes it!

A Southperry Choose Your Own Adventure! [Story/Game] - MetaSeraphim - 2011-06-04

I want to see these dead ends! As in, seeing them wrote out.

A. We know nothing about this guy. He could be bad news or good news, but options B or C won't let us find that out.

A Southperry Choose Your Own Adventure! [Story/Game] - Panacea - 2011-06-04

C seems to feel right to me.

A Southperry Choose Your Own Adventure! [Story/Game] - Piggy 2.0 - 2011-06-04

Sure is Louis Cypher up in here. Going with A nonetheless.
