If one can discourage them by just informing them about the product they might buy there shouldn't be a problem. Then again, this thing isn't really worth my time. Still, I have never hoped for a product to fail as hard. Sure, piracy and used games are bad for the industry (well, mostly publishers...), but forcing strict DRM isn't the way to do it. I wonder how much people would care if they hadn't called it an Xbox. Or if they made it so the people watching the reveal weren't gamers. Nintendo has had full BC support for two generations of consoles now, and every generation of handhelds since the Game boy colour (being the second major handheld...), so there is no good reason that everyone can't offer it. Change in input media just means you need another slot for the other input media. XBox One and XBox 360 run on completely different computer architectures, which means you need to build and support an XBox 360 emulator in x86. That's a lot of pineappleing work (and it may not be possible to get to a desirable performance level). Sony is only making it work by porting individual games over to x86. Nintendo has done backwards compatibility in the past by emulating the previous generation on hardware that is fairly similar. The more complex stuff gets, the harder it is to do that. There's a reason why you can pretty flawlessly run every GBA or N64 game on PC, but you run into all sorts of problems with more recent consoles, and it's not that modern PCs don't have the specs to run those games. Which clown even thinks up of these things? The idea that tying advertisement viewing to achievements doesn't work because people have better things to do during that time, that's why people need to change their ideas of how advertising on TV should work other than to make it look like you can accomplish anything by watching commercials. Dear lord Microsoft, if I were not typing this out on a Windows 7 laptop I might have to distance myself from all your products in case I get infected by the stupid idea virus. Unfortunately we'll never distance ourselves from Windows, because of most games only supporting Windows. It's getting better...but I doubt gaming PCs will ever switch over to Linux exclusively, even with WINE, Steam Support, and everything like that. We're f**ked with Windows for a very long time. Just don't buy 8. Windows 8 was rejected by me well before Microsoft decided to pen in more reasons to not get it (See: Further screw-ups). It's a sad thing that Windows is so prevalent because that means they still get money even if Xbox One crashes and burns but we'd be happy just to see that people are voting with their feet instead of their money. I'm in the same boat as you. My new Laptop has 8 on it by default, though, which is painful (and hard to get rid of because of the stupid fast boot secure bullsh'it from hell), but I've been able to make it far less so. All those new, terrible features are rotting away, never to be used, not even the Start Menu though, because they're all awful. Classic Shell ftw there. Still, I have no intention of voluntarily installing Windows 8 at any point in time. I'm really curious as to who is deciding all these new things for Microsoft, really. First they started with that TERRIBLE Ribbon crap that I wish would go away. Then they went with Windows 8, which is awful. There's also Office 2013...which just looks bland and uninteresting. Now Xbox One... Whoever is their main idea/money making thought guy needs to be removed. If it's a whole department then so be it, because it's awful. Microsof Wrote:Two examples given include doling out achievements for watching a single event like the Super Bowl, or for watching an entire series of a single show. If that's not bad enough, consider waving the Sponsored Product of the Day in front of the camera or imitating a shooter to get some 'Shooter Impersonator' award. Consider that people might be watching you and you might have to explain that you're doing it for a TV achievement. Xbox One - Moonlapse - 2013-05-25 I'm strongly considering skipping out on consoles altogether and just upgrading my PC. You're really trying to justify this decision from a company who flaunts they spent a billion dollars to make a sh`itty VCR that is concerned more with controlling the consumer? I'd be more lenient bu this is a billion dollar company, who specializes in software for computers, this was because of lazyness not difficulty. You are correct in the sense that it has a different architecture. In fact Xbox One went all out and got a "custom" x64 for unbeknownst reasons, couple this in with the fact that the Wii U runs on an x86 and so does the PS4 and you possibly no longer have the neat portability you had the last generation. Was bound to happen I suppose. Sony isn't making it work by "porting" anything what have you. They're using a streaming service that streams the video and takes in your input to a cloud service that plays the game for you. It is their whacked version of the virtual console. However, this is where you're wrong. Nintendo has indeed done backwards compatibility by emulating them and that is very true. However the reason why emulating post-N64/PS1 consoles on the computer is hard is by no means due to the fact that it's difficult to emulate for the company making the consoles themselves, but rather because it is difficult to reverse engineer them completely. Take into consideration the fact that the companies themselves know all the ins and the outs of the system themselves, this makes the reverse engineering stage with disassembling, OAM, et al all considerably easy on their part. This is why it's hard to emulate -- because it's become harder to reverse engineer them. Xbox One - Razmos - 2013-05-25 What kind of achievements could you get for watching TV? I'm genuinely curious. I died laughing xD Xbox One - Yoorah - 2013-05-26 Whether this fails or not will depend on the games more than anything else. As far as the whole home entertainment hub thing is concerned, this thing is not going to be successful: On one hand you have smart TVs that incorporate all of those media functionalities like Netflix access and whatnot--said TVs are going to become more and more widely adopted. For those who do not own smart TVs, there are cheaper media boxes like Apple TV and other similar devices. Then there's people with more serious gear like HTPCs. All of these people are not gonna care about the Xbox One's features--if they'll get one, it'll be for the games only. On the other end of the market spectrum, you have the cable TV providers pushing increasingly sophisticated and interactive technologies through the cable boxes they deploy across their massive consumer bases. Cisco is a real powerhouse when it comes to developing these technologies and the latest iteration, Videoscape Unity, is being deployed across various carriers right now: Sorry Microsoft, there's no room for you here.
