You could do an under the counter trade with other players for in game currency but you risk getting scammed and if the user chargebacks your account will get banned. Also the cash items in trickster give crazy stats. It'd be the equivalent of Nexon selling Zakum Helmets and Horntail Pendants in the Cash Shop. So count your blessings that it's at least possible to compete in this game without spending money.
Your point is valid, but if MTS was for people like you MTS wouldn't exist. MTS is for people like me, who charge NX to buy items in it. People can argue "free game" all they want. For every person I meet that's like you, who plays the game for "free" I meet maybe 20 who don't think it's free. Competitive players can charge as much as $50 a day on this game. With events such as this Gach box thing, where people are getting Chaos Scrolls for like $1.50, playing turns into a spending spree. Compare that to something like WoW, where you pay a subscription fee but don't otherwise spend money. My point is, the game should have no mind games that compel the spending of money. Having superhuman willpower should not be necessary to play Maple for free.
Also, saying "if you don't like it, go to another game," fails to size up the situation imo, even though that's what most people who argue "free game" say. I actually have more incentive to stay than the vast majority of ppl on Maple, precisely BECAUSE I expended so much money. I have endgame gear for both mage and two attacking classes, and my main is a lvl 159 bishop and getting higher daily. After having wasted all this money, and getting to the point where I can finally waste less, (I need nothing but charms and 2x cards,) I want to finish with this game, so I have no regrets when I DO leave it.
Edit: I hope that doesn't sound rude; I don't mean to be, it's just that this event combined with some other stuff to make me a lot more grouchy than usual.

I'm not saying Nexon is perfect, all I'm saying is it's a lot better than it's competetion in the free MMO world. If you can honestly go play a game like Trickster or Flyff and tell me that it's being run better than Nexon is running maplestory, I'll shut up. I know that you can't do that, because I've already tried most of the other free MMO's for the same reason you are posting about. Before the MTS came out I felt exactly the same way about balance. I agree that Nexon really messed up the economy with these boxes but I still say it's more fair than other games.
No Free to Play MMO can be 100% fair, they have to support the game some way and the cash shop is the way that they do that. At least the best weapons and items are tradeable. In many games, you can't even trade the cash shop equipment which completely crushes the in game equipment (Cough... Trickster.... Cough). I think Maplestory is about as fair and balanced as a Free to Play game is going to get. Yeah, it makes people who pay real money able to be godly and rich with little to no effort, but at least it also makes cash shop items available to other players who are willing to put forth the effort.
Just for the fun of it because I was bored, I added up my MTS History. Apparently I've bought $626 (626,537 NX Cash) worth of NX with mesos. Lol

assuming kavatine isnt a real word, i suppose it makes more sense than calling it maple story, since it has nothing to do with maple. made up words always did do well with fantasy-based plots... or for maple's case, "plots".

Maple Story 3D will probably fail. Being 2D is what makes Maple Story unique.
If they bring it to America, I don't think it will last. (like Kart Rider LOL)
MapleStory 2 will probably be a huge expansion to the original Maplestory.
It would probably give the skill animations upgrades, UI upgrades, NPC upgrades, backround and other things like that upgrades.
That is my guess.

On the other hand, every 1000 NX in the MTS costs at least $1.10 to someone, so for your $660 of spending, Nexon got at least $730. More if the NX changed hands several times :p They really win when people use MTS'd NX to buy NX items.
I have got about 25k NX in MTS so far >_< Not much Red Wyverns drop is worth anything so I've run out of stuff to sell.

Kartrider more likely didn't last because a bunch of assholes from every other country (including ones that ALREADY HAD THE GAME) jumped into the game to be "pro" and make the game no fun for anyone else.
Everything said, I don't know how it will fail since tons of 3D games exist and they're all well populated.

I've been thinking a lot about this topic and how it could/should be done with the 3d game and still keep the MapleStory touch. Today, I went to Nexon Korea's site out of pure curiousity. Thats where I found this jewel. Assuming Kavatina Story is not MapleStory 3D, which I believe is very much a possibility (and I don't think it would play like that, but it might. Ya never know), this is how I imagine MapleStory 3D to be like (minus the shooting action stuff). A side-scrolling 3D adventure RPG. I mean, that would be the best way to keep the gameplay Maplers love, while making the game 3D.
As for the Kavatina Story thing, for some reason I'm hoping this isn't MapleStory 3D, but instead another new great game. Don't know why, just do. Call me greedy, but TWO new games to play sounds better than one. But sadly, I do view it as a possibility, soley because of the "Story" in the title. What better way to tie the two games together than to keep a word in the title the same.

I'm not really into 3D games. It might turn out into a mix of Lunia, Wow, PerfectWorld, Runscape, Final Fantasy MapleStory. I mean, it wouldn't be interesting if a game has similar options to another one. MapleStory is already as unique as it is [even though I personally think it is deterioating].

Is this actually a sequel to MapleStory still? Or is KavaTina story its own game? I'd much prefer it to be its own game, even though MapleStory has been out for a while, theres still so much that could be done with it. its too early for a sequel IMO, and if it hit stateside anytime soon all my effort would be wasted on the first game since nobody would play it anymore.

Kava Tina story is more than likely its own game. Its just the same people that made MapleStory is making this game (There will likely be cameos from Maple in this game

I dunno, i play maple because its 2D. FPS are about all i like to see in 3D, and they have to be pretty realistic to be good.
