You just can't reference specific ones, you can talk about their effects, but not about them directly.

Yes it's Urban Dictionary, but apparently you haven't arrived to the stage of life where people will use words regardless of whether you're LGBT, Disabled, Race, or Sex. Could I have used a better word? Yes, I could have. Did I want to? No I didn't. Because I know most people know I'm not insulting the LGBT community. Hell, I regularly donate, participate, and promote LGBT activities in my state. Do I agree with everything the at large LGBT community does? No, I don't. But do I support equal rights? You bet your ass I do.

I was going to support you and your friends, because I thought you were all a little funny, but now you're just being a massive d'ick.

Hypermug; I appreciate your reply to him, but apparently he didn't understand. But you are right. Also this is not directed towards you at all.
And in your book you're reclaiming a word you have no right to reclaim.

All you're doing is extending the usage of the word that has had a long homophobic connotation to it and making it "ok" to use. It's not especially in the context of your usage. You can try and make logic to say that it's based on how a person views it or quote some South Park garbage but the general consensus for any informed LGBTQ+ member is that if you don't belong to us, you should not be using that word. This is besides the whole direction this thread is going other than the users of this forum getting mad at us for posting "light-hearted fun" even if it is understood by a few people.

Also, you're a terrible person if you trivialize the history of the word by saying that it was used originally to describe a bundle of sticks. Did you also know that calling a black person a "negro" meant black in spanish? Do we argue over the usage and say "but it means black in spanish!" No, we don't in any English-speaking community.

@Dredragon
You barely participated in the community. If anything, you were one of the people pomegranate on the most in the league thread because you never discussed anything. You just posted pics of you pubstomping and everyone was annoyed with you because of it. Our usage of diction and spelling is so minuscule and if that's what you think we're talking about when we refer to diversity it only further confirms you never attempted to get into the community at all.

I don't even know why Hishotodo was talking about the DFOS members on here since they were all just sitting in KDnF with Baklava yelling at people over the most inane things in the KDnF section and MasPan didn't even do anything? Who was he? Wasn't he the guy that those three users put his name on a gif of Tyler Oakley? Yeah, I think that was him and I only saw him post in the League Thread and even then he never really said much, I think.

Biggest irony of this all is that a lot of you think we're circle jerking and we're all making contrasting points regarding our reasons for posting in this forum, yet the vast majority straight out call us morons because we think the rules are too strict and we are questioning the actual point in the rules and their restrictions on posting. It seems this forum already has its own circlejerk. Read a few posts implying that we're trolling but really if we were actually trolling we would've jumped into the irc and more onto personal attacks or ad hominem (And trust us we came from DFOS we know enough about logical fallacies and all that jargon)

We haven't really done anything truly damaging, I'm thinking. Our joking and playing have obviously gotten a few of you mad but I promise you we only wanted to see if you guys would've joined the conversations and joked around also but it seems like whatever isn't a part of the forum's obvious circle jerk is attempting to break down the "establishment". The only actually justified and truly disruptive behavior I've even seen is Dice's efforts to get attention from the mods with his threads, in my opinion, but what do I know? I've been on here for less than a week.

I NEED A HITTA Wrote:And in your book you're reclaiming a word you have no right to reclaim. .

I am almost positive the word papaya had nothing to do with the LGBTQ+ community.

"papaya (ˈfæɡət) or fagot
n
1. a bundle of sticks or twigs, esp when bound together and used as fuel
2. (Metallurgy) a bundle of iron bars, esp a box formed by four pieces of wrought iron and filled with scrap to be forged into wrought iron
3. (Cookery) a ball of chopped meat, usually pork liver, bound with herbs and bread and eaten fried
4. a bundle of anything
vb (tr)
5. to collect into a bundle or bundles
6. (Knitting & Sewing) needlework to do faggoting on (a garment, piece of cloth, etc)
[C14: from Old French, perhaps from Greek phakelos bundle]"

In fact I believe I have read that the word was not used to describe homosexuals till like 1914 in print. So are you not also doing the same thing you are accusing the other person is doing?

Either the American Language is fluid and always evolving, which it is, and can have words switch meaning often or it is extremely static and rigid and you need to release your claim to the word papaya by the standards you set.

That's my two cents on it.
Have a great day. Smile

hey guys - KhainiWest - 2014-02-02

No one here actually knows the history of f`aggot? Oh moore4me; you were close

It took Americans to apply the term to male homosexuals. First some history.
The term papayagot or papayaot, meaning bundle of sticks, shows up around 1300 in English. It almost certainly came from Old French, possibly going back to Greek phakelos. Since those bundles of sticks were mainly used for fires, it's not surprising that the term came to mean burning sticks. Then there was that nasty business in medieval times where heretics were burned at the stake. Some later cites indicate heretics who repented and were spared a fiery death had to wear a picture of a papayagot on their sleeve to show what might have been their fate. But no print evidence exists that homosexuals were referred to as papayagots before the twentieth century, with the origin definitely in the U.S., not Britain.

The British continued to use the words papaya and papayagot as nouns, verbs and adjectives right through the early 20th century, never applying it to homosexuals at any time. To papaya or to be a papaya was a common term in British schools from the late 1700s and referred to a lower classman who performed chores for upperclassmen. While this term was also in vogue at Harvard in the first half of the 19th century, it died out by the mid-1800s in the U.S., leaving it in use only in England. Nineteenth century Britons also heard "papayagot" used in reference to an ill-tempered woman, i.e., a ball-buster, a battleaxe, a shrew. That meaning of the term continued into the early 20th century, and the usage was gradually applied to children as well as women. The relationship, if any, between papayagot-as-bundle-of-sticks and papayagot-as-shrewish-woman is unknown.

The first known published use of the word papayagot or papaya to refer to a male homosexual appeared in 1914 in the U.S. It referred to a homosexual ball where the men were dressed in drag and called them "papayaots (sissies)." Ernest Hemingway, in The Sun Also Rises (1926), included the line, "You're a hell of a good guy, and I'm fonder of you than anybody on earth. I couldn't tell you that in New York. It'd mean I was a papayagot." A 1921 cite says, "Androgynes [are] known as 'fairies,' 'papayas,' or 'brownies.'"
George Chauncey, in his excellent 1994 work Gay New York: Gender, Urban Culture, and the Making of the Gay Male World, 1890-1940, says that the terms fairy, papayagot, and queen were used by homosexuals to refer to men who were ostentatiously effeminate. Homosexuals who were not as showy referred to themselves as "queer" in the first decades of the 20th century. But the general public mainly called homosexuals "fairies." If you were in London in the 1920s through the 1940s and used the term "papaya," the man in the street might have offered you a cigarette, and quite possibly that would have been the case with many Americans at the time.
All of this does little to answer your original question: How did a bundle of sticks come to mean a homosexual male? Most likely it didn't. Here we'll have to go to theory. Since I'm writing this, mine will have to do.

We notice with some words a progression of usage that morphs along the lines of "woman/girl" > "woman/girl/child" > "effeminate male" > "homosexual male." The word fairy is a good example. "papayagot" in the sense of an ill-tempered woman is another. I independently came to that conclusion while answering a general question on the SDMB. But, in a post to the American Dialect Society mailing list, Dr. Laurence Horn, professor of linguistics at Yale University, posted the progression that I just used (he did it much more succinctly than I could). Still unexplained is how a Britishism jumped the ocean in a short period of time to acquire a new meaning in the U.S. Perhaps it was an independent formation. Words happen.

As a last thought, a current notion holds that the Yiddish word faygeleh,"little bird," might have been the source, but lacks evidence other than the claim that the word was commonly used in Yiddish prior to WWII to indicate a homosexual. With the digitizing of publications allowing searching never before possible, perhaps some further scholarship will be forthcoming to help solve the mystery.

Why can't you guys think of the children and of the LGBTTQQIIAA+ community? Why can't we just go back to the way we used to be and go on tumblr and just reblog our favourite images and checking our privileges like normal folks?

Notice how this is not affiliated specifically to homosexuals, so sexuality, in this case is irrelevant, unless you want to discuss white privilege.
