The point Joe was trying to make is that in more situations than you'd think, the law-abiding citizen who owns a gun wouldn't be able to defend themselves either. Much like a two-year-old. If the 5-year-old had shot his mother, who undoubtedly knows how to handle guns, would she have been able to do anything about it?
Obviously, sarcasm works much better if you agree with its message, not so much if you don't.

I sort of agree with the premise, actually; they won't be able to stop them from shooting in most cases simply by having a gun of their own. I'm more of the mind that, if someone shoots me, I really, really want to shoot them back. Doesn't change the fact that I got shot, but at least I feel slightly better about it because the person that hurt me also has to suffer. Yes, I am a very petty person, and I don't have a better reason than that.

Expect you'll be dead after being shot or be in too much pain to even consider trying to shoot them back or simply unable to even pick your gun back up.

Well obviously if they shoot me in the head or a vital organ I will probably die, I'm not immortal. But then, if they do that, they will get a much longer prison sentence, so in the end I'm still causing them to suffer even posthumously.

None of that changes the fact that you having a gun would have helped or changed anything about you'd either be dead or on the ground in pain with your gun not being near you. Which is the point of Joe's joke. But lets end this here before this gets anymore stupid.

I just don't understand the fondness people have towards guns and the insane arguments that are made up to keep using them.
I'm fairly sure at least 75% of the mass murderings in the USA could've been prevented if the culprit who did it wouldn't have been able to get a gun due to regulations.
This might also be an effect of my political opinion, but everyone here agrees that we should have strict gun laws and that you are not allowed to own a gun if you don't use it for stuff like hunting. And if you try to get one anyway your background history is heavily checked.
Even some arguments I've seen in this thread already baffle me, don't even get me started on the NRA.

Which is never going to happen it's like the war on drugs on steroids. Stiffer regulations makes it harder for everyone to get a gun citizens and criminals who steal them form citizen that is where a large portion of guns on the street come from.

I wonder if you even know what type of regulations would require that they don't actually have already. It's easy to say "MORE RULES ARE NECESSARY", but I'm going to take a guess that none of you actually registered for a gun before.

I tend not to participate in discussions like this, but I have to say that I find it really strange that gun ownership like the way it currently is is acceptable in the US. Culture and parentage play such a huge part in this (as do the media and politicians) that these problems won't be able to be solved with just better regulation.

'Regulation' in the strictest sense, isn't what we need. What we need is a reform of present policies i.e. the government obfuscating statistical trending data on gun behavior & the FBI only having three days to make a decision on gun warrants when they are 'on the fence' about whether or not the purchaser is a threat to society are flawed laws that have been implemented. We haven't had a director for The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives for seven years because Senate Republicans have blocked the White House's attempts to name a new director of the bureau.

I agree, adding more rules on top of rules that arent either being enforced, taken seriously, or help the problem, is just a bad infrastructure to build off of. A good start is a more scrutinizing background check, however even with that, incidents, specifically this one, could not be avoided.

Too bad no one here is saying that, everyone here has just been calling the parent idiots for leaving a child alone with a loaded gun. Most of em are just shocked about the whole 5 year old kid getting a gun for his birthday which in and of itself isn't a bad thing. They must think he'll have access to it whenever he wants which probably wasn't going to be the case.
