I tried to do the fire hopping thing once and drifted into a wall and died.

I wouldn't call it a glitch perse, its just abusing the in game physics, as hopping removes the friction of the track slowing you down thus giving you a better boost. It's just an unadvertised unintended trait that was added into the game due to physics.

Hopes for a fix.
Bikes are already kind of being phased out in favor of karts. It's mostly due to the courses and coin / item placements favoring outward drifting and the fact that bikes don't give any sort of speed boost at all, while some karts (Mach 8, Golden Standard, etc) give +0.5 speed.
They're still good for GP though, but if you plan on playing online for a long time then you'll want to prefer karts.
Bikes are pretty much niche choices now. Few courses favor their inward drifting, but majority favor karts.

Thats still a glitch though, is it not? Its uninteded, and gives one vehicle a clearly large advantage over another, so how can you really justify it as anything but a glitch? I dunno, i just feel like people enjoy abusing crap like this a little too much and then try whatever they can to justify it. Its like wavedashing and pomegranate in melee. Its a glitch. Plain and simple.

you're definition of glitch is not in the normal terms of the term then. A glitch is when something happens that shouldnt happen at all due to a malfunction of a calculation or something. Having less friction in the air is defined by the physics engine of the game, and is NOT a glitch, but the ability to jump and conserve speed is abusing the engine(as that's how the engine is designed), and not abusing a glitch.
e.g Capturing mew using the mew trick is a glitch because it depends on the "special" stat of the first pokemon you would have fought, Missingno is a glitch because the old man alters game memory. On the other hand, tricks like wavedashing in Smash Bros is NOT a glitch, but a physics exploit. This trick would be considered a physics exploit.

it's even more pineappleing annoying that Nintendo is saying it's a personal issue and not theirs.
Also apparently the item distribution is based on distance between you and 1st place, which would explain why I sometimes get the coin item in 5/6/7/8/etc at the start at a race.

based mario kart, this is actually the best idea being implemented. also, i must be the only person who liked snaking in DS. but to the guy who said that boostjumping makes people pick one specific car and makes others unusable, that has happened since ever. the very moment cars had different stats the minmaxers appear.

Granted the "Fire Hopping" seems to really only be effective in Time Trials. I've seen high VR players online and they don't even bother trying to "Fire Hop" at all, because items are OP. They've just been using the "Max Speed" kart combos and nothing more.

this thing's also kinda funny because i used to do it in every other game but at the end of the boost, even when i knew that it didn't work (or that if it did work, it gave me pretty much no advantage)

same here, between MK8, SSB4 and ZeldaU, the wii-u is starting to really look great
my R button is also sorta damaged in that it does't respond when it feels like it, along with the L button, but i blame megaman zero for those
