I think in terms of healing, they're both the same. Mutant Snail just does more damage (do people really use familiars for damage? o-o)
I'd like to know the answer to the second question too, seeing as I also have a 16x aran who hasn't done the wolf mount quests.

I believe high leveled familiars also have more vitality, as Jr. Boogie dosen't last nearly as long as Mr. Alli.

nooooo I just took like a couple of hours hunting my 3rd platoon chronos familiar a few days ago. Now i have to get 3 more to make it permanent. Well luckily my mutant snail is only at 1

If I currently have 1 orb on my Mutant Snail and use another card, would that make it permanent or do I have to wait for it to expire first before using a new card?

You just need another card. I tried it with Axe Stumps (which had 1) and it went to permanent.

I guess the other big appeal of the mutant snail is that it'll work on empress and (maybe?) dojo. I can't clear dojo in a decent amount of time on my Aran because of that empress mana regen bug that still hasn't been fixed.

Iirc we never use mutant snail and stuff in empress because it messes up potion cooldown.

I think you're supposed to summon it to heal everyone instead of yourself.
Then desummon it when your pot cds.
