Phantom - Corazon - 2011-12-29 Thanks for filling in what I don't know, Viaje. Remind me never to eat what Hollywood throws out as truth ever again. Man, I'm such an idiot. Also, I assumed since Afrien and Freud had a single, conjoined spirit (due to the pact), that whatever happened to one would happen to the other. Thus if Freud died, it would've made sense that Afrien died as well. Then again, what do I know? Phantom - Corazon - 2011-12-29 Thanks for filling in what I don't know, Viaje. Remind me never to eat what Hollywood throws out as truth ever again. Someone's been reading Eragon. Phantom - Sarah - 2011-12-29 Wow, that video is a perfect example of why I dislike anime. Around three minutes of that video was completely unnecessary sparkling eyes. Phantom - Corazon - 2011-12-29 Raul Wrote:Someone's been reading Eragon. No, I was thinking Dragonheart when that theory came up. I felt that it wouldn't work if the Black Mage tried it on Freed's end, since dragons are known to have an incredible amount of vitality, vigor, and endurance - so Freed could just simply bounce back if he was injured. Not the case if the target of a lethal spell was Afrien - especially if said spell can wipe out a Dragon in one shot. Freed wouldn't survive an attack meant to kill a dragon, I'm quite sure. Adventurers already have the option to participate in almost anything going on in the Maple World. It's just up to them to choose whether or not they help. I do suppose the UAs could get a few quests since they were designed to better fight the Black Mage. In fact, I'd think that Afrien could have established a new pact were he willing to do so. Phantom - Corazon - 2011-12-29 Viaje Wrote:Nope. The link 'just' strengthens the other partner. I see. Thanks for the clarification. Phantom - Baklava - 2011-12-29 Viaje Wrote:The sort of interaction that quests provide? Current quests are pretty pointless as to what's going on. You go somewhere, do something, get something, and that's the end of that. To top it off, there's nothing that other classes can't do either. Everyone has the option of participating in everything. Phantom - Corazon - 2011-12-29 Baklava Wrote:Current quests are pretty pointless as to what's going on. You go somewhere, do something, get something, and that's the end of that. Storywise, though, the Heroes, the Royal Army, and the People's Militia of Edelstein all have a story-based obligation to fight this war. Heroes: People close to them have suffered. Mercedes intervened because the Black Wings were threatening the Elves (a gesture Mercedes, as Queen, took as a declaration of war against her people and her allies); Freed and Afrien wanted peace in the world, and their goals are a factor in their involvement; Aran did it because he's noble (and in the Second War, did so because he needed to finish the job he didn't the last time); Phantom's in it because the woman he loved died by the hands of the Black Wings. Royal Army (AKA Cygnus Knights): As the only REAL official army of the Maple World, they have an obligation simply out of their status as rulers of the humans of Maple World. Cygnus cares about the kingdom she rules, so she obviously participates because of this. People's Militia of Edelstein (AKA Resistance): They had their sovereignty taken from them, and their rights/freedoms dictated by a tyrant. Not to mention that Demon Slayer lost his mother and sibling from a backstabbing betrayal. For Demon Slayer, his is a quest of revenge, much like Phantom's (difference between them being that Phantom had noble origins, whilst Demon Slayer is a defector). However, for the Resistance kids, it's a rebellion, much like the American Revolutionary War (in a sense). Explorers: Think of them as hired arms. Mercenaries, if you will. Their involvement is out of choice, and many choose to do so with a "Soldiers of Fortune" mentality - they fight because they are getting paid and seek wealth/treasure/fame. Others fight out of a sense of duty/moral obligation. Some will fight simply because they're bored. And then there are those who fight to defend the world they love, not unlike the other armed bodies involved. Strange, because I remember the part about talking weapons also when I made my Aran on the release date. For another example, I also seem to remember that the Aran cutscene mentioned that the heroes were sealed along with their memories (can't remember the exact wording), which heavily implied that all of the heroes lost their memories, but apparently that's only the case for Aran. Even if the previous storylines don't directly clash with what Nexon's coming up with right now, I still get a very strong feeling of inconsistency when reading through the new plot backstory. It's like, rather than feeling that I suddenly understand more about the backstory and that it all makes more sense now, I actually have a lot more questions and doubts about how everything worked out as it did. Phantom - Corazon - 2011-12-29 Haishiro Wrote:Strange, because I remember the part about talking weapons also when I made my Aran on the release date. Hence why I believe the next patch series will fix that. As well as add the final Hero, and then a new Commander. After which I DO believe we'll start a string of patches that will lead to the finale - the Final Battle of the Second War. And as someone I trust once said: "This fight will be no joke." Phantom - Corazon - 2011-12-29 Combattente Wrote:As far as I know, the pact is unbreakable. I think Corazon is right. Yeah, I thought so too, which is why I immediately thought of Dragonheart when I heard this bit about Freed and Afrien's relationship. Lemme use an example of why my theory makes sense in Afrien being the weak link (hypothesis of course): Suppose, for example, I made a "Spirit Pact" with, let's say Horntail for odd measure (yeah, I know it makes no friggin sense, but still). Horntail is a dragon of immeasurable strength. Through the contract, my life and his are bound as one existence. However, on Horntail's end, he'd be the life source (since he has the biggest amount of it). Now, let's say an attack was aimed at me that would be fatal to me. Were I not "bound" in this case, that would be the end of it. However, by factoring in that I essentially have Horntail's life force, an attack that would kill any ordinary human is more of a flesh wound if aimed at me. Even using said attack on Horntail would have similar pain, but could not outright kill (this is assuming it even lands a direct hit). Now then, what if an attack was aimed at Horntail that was solely made to kill a dragon of Horntail's caliber? Said attack would have a greater, more magnified effect on me because 1)I am not a dragon, and 2)both a dragon's mass and tolerance to pain are greater than a mere human's. Thus, if an attack aimed at Horntail designed SPECIFICALLY to kill him in one blow lands a direct hit, the resulting amplification of the damage involved would quite literally blow me to pieces. In this case, Afrien took the attack meant for Freed. The Black Mage anticipated this, and had used the spell with the presumption it would hit the Dragon, not the human. He theorized that if the Onyx Dragon's loyalty was as strong as Afrien claimed, then Afrien would, by logic, shield Freed from any fatal attack, even if said attack was meant to kill him and not his human partner. His theory proved correct, and thus Freed (and perhaps Afrien) died as a result of the power that was used in the conception of said spell. Phantom - Kojo - 2011-12-29 That video made me lol so many times. Purple sharingan? Mercedes and Athena being fangirls? I loved how Aran didn't give two shits. Phantom - Combattente - 2011-12-29 Corazon Wrote:-snip- Yep, that's probably it. Phantom - Razmos - 2011-12-29 We don't know exactly how Freed died, but we know that the Black Mage was powerful, maybe he managed to sever the bond between Freed and Alfrien, perhaps that was how they were cursed. Freed being simply human meant that the bond being severed killed him and severely weakened Alfrien. At least thats the way i see it. I do believe the Global Maple backstory for Freud supports my theory. In fact, during the First War, the Black Mage tried to recruit the Onyx Dragons, but Afrien flat out refused.
