Will gach, cubes etc. soon become illegal? - Exidous - 2011-09-24

How? The in game currency you spend is one step away from real money. Is a casino no longer a casino when they use tokens instead of cash, assuming you have to buy the the tokens. Or is it because you can't cash out (according to Nexon)?

Because in fact, you can cash out. Moreover, because value is inherently relative. If people spend real money on NX, it's worth real money. If we can gamble with nx as a proxy, we may as well be gambling with real money. One proxy exchange in between doesn't change that.

Nexon needs to be held as responsible as any online casino is. If you don't have a problem with unregulated gambling fine, but make no mistake that's exactly what this is.

Gratz, you basically said in-game currency and real life money are one and the same.

Yes, that was my entire point. You can exchange real money for NX, and NX for real money. How is it not effectively the same thing? NX is an inferior store of value compared to cash because you have to use the intervening transaction to use it for things outside of game, but that doesn't mean it's not measurable in real money.

Real money that little kids are gambling away in horrifying quantities with absolutely no oversight or regulation whatsoever.

Wouldn't that make the potential system even more OP and literally divide the game between meso-maplers and NX-maplers? :f6:

Actually, it would be impossible to be a NXless mapler anymore. Meso would become completely useless, people would buy and sell stuff via MTS.

Not entirely. Like I said, right now the whole system is based around who can throw more money at the game than others. The DFO system could easily make it so you pay like 15-20k NX for a 27% unique item or some crap and call it a day.
Even then, mesos are already an utter joke. You can essentially hit Meso cap in a week or two and then just throw all that currency at the MTS and buy your potential choice of stats from there.

Also, unless you give two pomegranates about Maple, you're going to be spending NX one way or another. The term "F2P" has long been gone for the "Serious" players.

I was talking about Mesos vs NX, not NX vs NX :f6:

You can trade mesos for $, and $ for mesos.

Which is already an illegal system in itself and violates the ToS in more ways than one. Nevertheless you can make double the profit from getting mesos elsewhere :|

Mesos are one more step away than NX.

As long as real money goes into this game real money comes out too. I agree with you that scrolling is different from cubing in terms of how gambling-ey it is, but I differ in that its only in terms of degree. Baccarat versus penny slots, not gambling versus not. There's nothing qualitatively different about spending real money on nx (which you sell for mesos, and buy scrolls with) versus putting money in a casino, or cubing for that matter. Cubes are just hideously more convenient and expensive. It takes a bit longer to sink real converted money into scrolling.

It has to do with the model of success Nexon used. In other MMOs, the best gear is low probability drops from certain instances or other, not-gachapon-machine things the player undertakes. In MS its from success rates from scrolling or cubing or what not (mostly).

So how would Nexon not create this obvious dubiousness? They'd have to completely change the scrolling/upgrading system. Or, by not making NX useful for gameplay purposes. Mesos would still be a problem, but at least it could be a two way street of Nexon saying you can't exchange real money for in game currency or in game currency for real money instead of this absurd one way hypocrisy.

Every single MMO has these "illegal" transactions involving $ for gold.
Saying mesos don't have value is ignorant.
Edit: I understand that currency was the wrong word choice, stop quoting this post Tongue
Replacing the word currency with value.

So what you're suggesting is I could use my Mesos at a store like a Debit card? Rolleyes
Or how about a TF2 hat? Just because someone would pay real physical money for some virtual item, due to rarity, exclusivity or some other nonsense, DOES NOT give it value in the real world.

Brb, going to a store and telling them I'll give them a virtual currency for real worldly goods. I'll get back to you on how successful that was.
I'm sorry, but are you really this stupid?

Currecy isn't the right word sorry Tongue
I'm saying mesos have value.
You can exchange them for money, just like you can exchange tangible things for money.

Value for MapleStory? Ok
Value for the Real World? That only goes back to our points.

An item that can be exchanged for money has value.

That and the "MTS 10atk WG" loop. Surprisingly, you can make profit off of it.

Blades4hire Wrote:An item that can be exchanged for money has value.

Value FOR WHAT!? You're completely dodging the point.

Mesos have value in MS
I can exchange them for $ which has value in RL
Mesos indirectly have value in RL.

Since when could you trade Mesos for actual dollars? "Meso -> NX" isn't the same thing.
