More importantly, the surface tension is what holds the liquid in the straw. It's narrow enough to allow that.

I am VERY surprised people actually think that one talking about selling gold is clever. The diameter of the earth is virtually the same at ALL locations, and so the gravitational pull upon the gold is also virtually the same. If the earth were a cone or something rather than a sphere, then yeah it could work. Monocle

That's actually an interesting point, Mad, I never even considered the rotation of the Earth's axis when I was thinking about gravitational pull; however I still don't think I'm wrong in saying that the idea would never work.

Just gonna point out that the diameter isn't the same since the earth isn't a perfect sphere.

Sure, it wouldn't work. But it has more to due with transportation and other costs than issues with gravity. I agree with you, but I disagree about why I agree with you.
