One Piece thread (Spoilers) - Mandalay - 2012-10-08

I finally gave reading the manga another chance and I'm 10 volumes in (where Luffy goes against Arlong and Nami's past with her mother).

Does the manga have any fillers or certain story arcs not worth the read? I know the anime has a lot but what about the manga?

:f6:

Uhh, generally speaking, there is no such thing as a filler manga arc. They're added to anime when they start getting too close to the manga (because they can't go ahead of the manga, as the story hasn't been written yet). So there aren't really any filler manga arcs you can skip.

Though in my opinion, there seems to have been a significant drop in quality of arcs since...two arcs ago, to avoid spoilers, I won't explain why.

I think One Piece's "filler arcs" are basically background stories for the older characters. Like for Ace and Luffy and for the pirate king and whatnot. There are some arcs that are epically slow and drawn out, but some are definitely worth the slower pace due to the massive mount of storyline that comes with it. The current arc is mediocre in that it is slow paced, but brings up a whole bunch of storyline and intrigue. If you like One Piece, I would definitely read all of the arcs.

The last manga I read in full was the whole Sailor Moon series, and there actually was a filler sub-plot involving one of the girls. So I was wary if One Piece was the same.*

I skipped ahead to Volume 60 for a bit and now I see what you meant by drop in quality of arcs.

Yeah, this is pretty much what I meant. Some of the arcs in Sailor Moon in particular are ridiculously long. Tongue

Guess I'll read all the arcs to catch up, even if I heard the latest ones aren't as great. Thanks.

The latest episodes in the anime I thought were good. I see a lot of foreshadowing in the manga lately, either way the story itself is fantastic so I suggest you get to at least when you hit drum island before deciding to drop it or not.

I'll probably stay hooked even after that arc considering it's only 5 volumes away for me. I'm hooked as is at Volume 10. 8D

Definitely planning to read to catch up to the anime then watch + read after that.

OT: Handy dandy One Piece Wikia!

You should watch the anime with someone, it really adds to the experience. Although my girlfriend and friends tease me all the time saying "I'm totally not excited to watch the next episode of this mediocre show, BUT I don't have all night so can you start shortly...".

By the way you should see my one piece flag Rolleyes

Wow that flag is pretty amazing... I don't know what was wrong with the first one. Looked fine to me.

I'd watch the anime if I and my bf had more free time :/ Might have to limit myself for now to only watching the chapters I really, really liked. :|

Also, if I can catch up to the anime, I don't stand a chance against my bf. At all. The minute it's out, he waits for no one. It's rather amusing seeing him fanboy:

"I'm so sad...I'm crying..."
"Why?? What happened!? Talk to me Sad"
"TODAY'S ONE PIECE....QQ."
"......"

Show your boyfriend and record his reaction. I DONT HAVE MANY ONE PIECE FRIENDS WHO COULD APPRECIATE THE AWESOMENESS. And the some that I have COULDNT EVEN NAME THE CHARACTERS BASED ON THEIR RESPECTIVE PERSONAL FLAGS. Frekin disgraceful!!

Really, Watch G8 (episode 194) onwards. That's when the anime starts riding up its climax.

He won't rewatch it with you? That's what I'm doing with my gf now, we're ironically are at 193. She wanted to skip the remainder of the skypiea arc, she read all the important details concerning it, it does get a little long and have to pull some shenanigans to make the main villain a challenge to luffy.

Personally I've watched all 500-600 episodes about 4 times Rolleyes. I have to rewatch it everytime I convince a friend to attempt to jump the hurdle.

KhainiWest; I'm sure he would. Just that we both have little free time right now. When I'm free, he's not and vice versa.

I can't stomach big animes the way you can re-watch it so many times over. Not since Detective Conan. Never again.

One piece is litterally an RPG, I love watching the characters grow, I love how much fun other people have watching it. I mean there's just so much but before you know it, you'll be like your boyfriend, asking for more as they give you one drop at a time Rolleyes

Neh. In my opinion, One Piece would be a far better anime if they'd add in some damn filler, or take a significant break to let the anime fall quite far behind the manga, so they could do 2-3 chapters an episode like fairy tail does. I can stand the pacing in the anime anymore (not that manga is much better).

Once the anime essentially degraded to this (Just replace the golden sun characters with One piece characters)

I gave up watching it.

I disagree, the manga and anime are slow right now because it's a lot of information he's trying to push in. It's in one of those budding stages where a lot of stories are about to open. The anime is following exactly what the manga is doing, lots of talk. My friend doesn't read the manga and still enjoys the episodes, but it's all opinionated at this point.

Also they had filler with ace/luffy. I'm sure they will have a filler arc after they deal with the arc the manga's currently in.

Maybe, but there are more chances of him asking the dragon to join the crew.

We got a major piece of information from this chapter even though this was a set up chapter.

Think he's trying to replicate luffy's father's fruit?

What makes you think that? I wasn't aware we even knew dragon had eaten a devils fruit.

It's heavily implied that he has, and he's either a zoan or a logia type involing the weather. So I would find it funny that Ceaser would try to replicate Dragon's fruit (since his name is dragon as well). It just seems like one of those "foreshadowed" connections oda would make
