As a guy going into IT, I fear for my children. (If i have any) - Sardines - 2012-02-09 The father was emotionally lashing out. He couldn't handle receiving criticism from his own kid, especially behind his back. For all purposes, their daughter might just be justified given how defensive he acted. We don't know the character of the girl so it is impossible to say, but I find most of the lashings to be relatively tame to what could have been said and I do think that they can bear weight. For someone who does chores around the house: vacuuming, mopping, doing dishes, and counter tops does eat up time. Expecting your daughter to have a job in this type of economic climate is also harsh. Sure, asking pay for doing chores is in my opinion ridiculous, but to be honest criticizing your own daughter for not having a job when she is trying to earn her high school diploma is something that can't be helped since an increasing amount of jobless college students are taking those jobs to meet the bills and look for better offers. I personally never had an actual job in high school, but I did receive around $50,000-60,000 in total for tuition. I don't think that I would ever be able to save that amount by working and I also do not think that I would have been able to perform as well academically if I was busy with work. I also don't think it's fair to judge someone who didn't have a job and wasn't able to get those scholarships. If effort was made that's what should matter when it comes to parenting, not always what you see as the immediate end result. Judging a child on an income argument is like Goliath telling David he's small. It's an incredibly unfair argument to make given that selection itself for employment is a subjective crapshoot these days and the market is oversaturated. And yes, children DO cost a crapload of money, but YOU shouldn't care because YOU are her father... I have a bad feeling she is going to leave the house asap when she gets 18 and he will never ever see her again after this... Sad story... As a guy going into IT, I fear for my children. I do not like accepting money from anyone; I'm not expecting everyone to be the same, but, money is extremely important to me, and I feel that unless I earn it myself it is just worthless paper. If you were expecting me to be a hypocrite that is all talk about something so important, you are terribly mistaken. As a guy going into IT, I fear for my children. Once it's gifted to you it is yours. That's like saying a Christmas bonus at work isn't really yours because it's a gift. You can't destroy something that isn't yours, period. As a parent you can take it away as a form of punishment for not following the rules but you can't DESTROY it. As a guy going into IT, I fear for my children. (If i have any) - Foxino - 2012-02-09 I dont know who is the dumbass. The father for overreacting and shooting away 1-2k$ to prove a point? Or? The daughter for posting on a public website bullshit about her parents who apparently do a lot for her. Also inb4 this gets turned into a meme. As a guy going into IT, I fear for my children. Makes me feel like it was a few years old, and the laptop didn't look like it was worth anywhere near 1k to begin with. If it was for a 15 year old, it was probably closer to 400-500 (especially if she "bought it") As a guy going into IT, I fear for my children. If we're looking at this through an objective business model, I've dealt with Landlord-Tenant contracts and I assure you that the Landlord coming in and shooting a good from the Tenant that he purchased is grounds for a lawsuit that would be Tenant sided. Even if the Tenant slandered the character of the Landlord on an online blog, restaurant beat site, or what have you. Also it's not her fault that the father never posted a stipulation for rent. Did she sign a contract saying what the payment would be in? Being forced to be born into a specific rent scale doesn't necessarily seem like a particular reason to feel grateful for the people giving you shelter. They do have a contract model: "chores for housing" based on the tone of the video. The tenant doesn't have to be emotionally happy with the agreed terms either, that's why you have lawyers. Sure, people should be happy with their home life, but things don't always work out that way. Expecting your kid to be happy is not addressing the problem. It's just continuing the trend. GODDAMIT WHY AREN'T YOU HAPPY KID. YOU DON'T EVEN DO THAT MUCH. From what I can tell, the people supporting the father insist that the child should be grateful since the intent of parents is that they usually mean to do well for their kids. But the father doesn't seem able to read the intent of the daughter which is that she was probably lashing out and frustrated at being faced with being unable to handle a dichotomy of pressure between schooling and chores. She lashed out on the internet anonymously, not knowing that her parents would see it. This matters not because we don't know whether she posted it to be malicious to her parents. If she knew her parents would be identified, you think she would have still done it? Does the father even cares about reading between the fine lines? It's easy to read on the surface, but you only really do that when you don't care about the people you are addressing. I mean, the father should be the more mature party in this circumstance... right? As a guy going into IT, I fear for my children. (If i have any) - LadyJenJen - 2012-02-09 So much rage! Tough love is good, though his methods were a little extreme. Still though, the fact that he shoots the laptop while wearing a hat and boots is entertaining. Gotta love my neighbors... For all we know, it's staged for publicity. Just seems a little too convenient....the typical ALL REDNECKS WEAR HATS AND BOOTS AND CARRY GUNS....and proceed to shoot technology. I don't think those are comparable; the tenant temporarily owns the space they are living in because they are paying the landlord for it. A kid does not, so they own absolutely nothing; if he really wanted to be a plantain, he could have just burned all of her stuff. I think he went pretty easy on her considering the number of repeat offenses and the language she was using directly against them. Sure words can't physically hurt you, but it's kind of a kick in the nuts when you realize your kid is so ungrateful that they won't even help you survive when you get too old to live on your own. I know a balanced or though-love parent is ideal but having permissive/careless parents sucks for everyone. As a guy going into IT, I fear for my children.
