We use to have one that was in a bag and my mom carried it everywhere. It weighed like 30 pounds.

This. Very much this. When I was in my teens, I had to convince my father that this phone used a radio signal. He was convinced that it worked by tapping into phone lines on the telephone poles and that as long as there was a phone line in view, he would get reception. He still doesn't really understand it to this day.
My son would have no idea what that is.
