I miss the much every single player got excited when they knew a new town was supposed to come out. Who doesn't remember how KFT and Omega Sector were exciting to be explored. Exploring... That was the best experience. Everyone was always happy when an update was implemented, when it happened, players used to think on how it was an opportunity to do new quests, in the times people actually cared to quests and how they used to reveal pieces of the game' story, and how a new area, although low leveled for the player, was nice to be explored. Spending a lot of time in graphic improvement of the maps, in creativity, was worth it because players actually cared about such things, instead of this EXP mania that we can see today.

Now, when a new area is implemented, players immediately care about:
Is it a godly leveling area, or just another alternative to the level range? If it's not something THAT great, it's just useless, like Chryse.
What does the last quest in the cycle gives? If it's not a decent equip, it's not worth going there.

No one cares about how the story will continue, if the areas are beautiful or not, if the story's interesting, about exploring, and actually having fun by doing so. No one has interest in such things, the new areas are just being made to implement a new job, or to just be in there with a completely awful storyline. MapleStory has changed drastically since the old times.
It's something you have to deal with, something that won't make you quit completely, but it's something that makes you miss the old days, where leveling twice in a week at 5x was worth it and nice, when completing and equipping a new equip set, acquired through hard work, felt good, about the true fantasy players had by that time, where you could actually live the game.

It just changed too much, it's not that the game became terrible, but the fact it doesn't even look close to the awesome game it used to be. Today, exploring new areas just for fun, waiting until your MP regenerates to hunt more, collecting equips, doing party quests all day and praying for getting an item in the bonus, feeling excited when a new job was implemented, instead of feeling like "Meh, another one" like you can see today. The game has changed enough, to make it look like a completely different game. What was said in Big Bang was true, because after it, the game truly changed completely.

Did anyone else ever form a team of complete strangers and venture into the sleepywood dungeon? These days, you can't even go there until you're level 50, and if you encounter anyone along the way they'll just fire a missile at you and ask you to vacate the map. And forget escorting lost newbies (who took the VIP cab from Lith Harbor) out of the dungeon; victoria island isn't even remotely dangerous anymore.

Speaking of danger, there's no thrill for the player, and certainly no exploration; his or her hand is held through a linear experience. Maple island is a straight shot. Back in the day, beginners used to live on that island because it was so much bigger, and they called themselves Islanders because of it. The player's first weapon is given to him. The player's first potions are stockpiled for him. The first levels are accomplished in a "training zone" located just outside of town, effectively discouraging exploration. People can't even reliably hit monsters a few levels above them, so their options are limited and their path is consequently set in stone.

The game is more user-friendly because of this, but it also ensures that a new player never needs to ask for help, and we are seeing the effects of that already. The whole community feels closed off, isolated. Haven't you noticed how it's harder to meet new people in this game? Or how quiet boat rides have become? It's because people don't need anyone anymore. A few years ago, the game had mystery. It wasn't user friendly, but that made its veterans all the more valuable because they knew pomegranate. They knew where Pig Beach was, and you could bet that you had to ask about its location back then, because hidden streets weren't glowing and screaming "here, here, I'm a hidden street!" at the player. They knew where the new player could train, and the new player had to ask because he couldn't just open the map and find it himself. People had to rely on each other somewhat, and the community was better for it, not worse. Older players felt good about the time they wasted on a game that offered no real world value, and new players felt cool because they accessed content that everyone and his dog wasn't already aware of. And maybe they befriended the person who helped them.

And sure, the new player could always go to hidden-street.net or something, but who do you think referred him there in the first place? Do you see what I'm getting at? One way or another, players relied on each other. They don't have to anymore. Hell, when you get strong enough, you can solo bosses that used to take several teams. It is absolutely ridiculous how single-player oriented this multiplayer game has become. It's done nothing but suffer as a result.

There are some things that I don't miss such as scrounging for pot money, but the game has changed too much. I'd say one of the biggest issues (excluding hackers and whatnot) is the potential system. Some things I do like about the new MS is cheaper pots and maybe easier leveling, though part of me feels it may be too fast in the early levels.

Also, I really hate Lionheart and all future places like it. It completely ruins the exploration to find new training grounds and condenses it all into one main area. The only thing good about Lionheart is the party system, but something like that should have been around much earlier.
