SwordStaker Wrote:OK so lets get opinions on this. I heard from my friend whos an ex hacker that once a hacker strikes an account they aren't likely to strike it again. Which seems true to me because most people I see get hacked never get hacked again0.o. I could say I'm an example but I can't>.> Only times I was hacked was first I was scammed(I was like 11 give me a break) and other times were my friends who watched me input my info and kept taking my crap>.> But what do you guys think that if your hacked your once your less likely to be hacked again?(or at least by the same person)

there are 2 kinds of account hackers.

1. the kind that use an exploit to steal many many different account infos, such as the one that was linked to in that other thread. those are the kind that are likely to just be hacked once, unless the hacker hit a jackpot on one. they may keep that info hidden somewhere in case that person is dumb and never changed info and refunded it.

2.the kind that target one specific person. these are the kind that are more likely to be hacked more than once. i know of a kid who was keylogged, had his character deleted, never got rid of the keylogger and got one of his merchant mules hacked twice.

it all depends on the person who was hacked and the measures they take after being hacked the first time.

So what if you changed your info like COMPLETELY. Would you be almost guaranteed safety?

If your email is secure you are safe. By secure it means:

Has a strong password, fictional/difficult security answers, and same apples too the back up email.

A hacker cannot hack your account if you don't do two things:

Tinyurl links
Expose your email, which should be hidden and not associated with anything public.

Seriously, that's it, there's a few instances that involve IP tagging, or keylogging open port's, but once again, just keep to your friends and keep that circle close'd.

The fact OdinMS was shutdown and threatened with a lawsuit did in fact shut them down, however it did not stem the tide of replacement private servers.

Parents also need to understand there are laws regarding hacking of databases and accounts that you do NOT own or did NOT create. Accessing of any account or database regardless of type or function without authorization of the creator and administration of the database and account is illegal and you can serve prison time and pay hefty fines. Regardless of whether it's a game or not, if you shouldn't have access to an account that isn't yours, you shouldn't be trying to access it nor should you gain access to it.

Parents often are oblivious to certain internet laws like hacking and even legal distribution of copyrighted material. Look at how many parents are facing all kinds of legal troubles over little Billy or Suzie's usage of file sharing services to get a movie, some music, or whatever. Some are facing thousands of dollars in fines and prison time and they claim, "we had no idea this was illegal much less we had no idea they were engaged in this activity".

Parents can make up excuse after excuse, but honestly, who's fault is it for not being a responsible parent and telling their child no? It's their own fault and now they are paying the price for it. Illegal activity, whether it be online, offline, or down by the 15th street water front docks... is still illegal.

Honestly, the problem I see with this is that most parents didn't grow up with computers and a LOT of them are completely computer illiterate, excluding email and general web surfing. This is a completely new era from when I even grew up, but I'm thankful I've had the interest and time to learn most things on my own. I didn't even get my first home PC until I was 27 years old. I had no clue how to use it, but thankfully my older cousin was a complete computer nerd and took the time to teach me most basic things before I went off in my own direction. It's not that most parents don't care or are irresponsible, it's that they are simply oblivious to the new technologies that are being created.

Let's face it, we ALL did things our parents didn't know about. It's not that they didn't pay attention, it's that WE figured out how to pull the wool over their eyes and get away with it. However, if we did get caught, we were the ones responsible for our actions. Unfortunately in this day and age, everyone wants to blame the parents. Believe me when I say you can teach children ALL of the right things in life and they STILL have their own mind and make their own choices, good, bad or indifferent. If you do nothing but make the parents responsible for their actions, they will never learn.

  • Saved my favorite things when hackers had the ability to CC to become you.
  • Saved my things when hackers had the ability to DC you and become you.
  • Would've saved Tals' things if she had them when her littlest kid played her account while she was AFK and dropped half her unrecoverable items.

They have value & purpose, but only so far as they were intended.
They're meant to prevent item loss, pure and simple, through any of the numerous ways that items can be lost, including your own screw ups.

They're not an anti-hacking device, they just happen to provide a little bit of protection in that event too.

I think in order for them to have value to me, they'd need at least 3 things added:
- prevent use of cursed scrolls of any kind
- account tradeable
- block deletion of character carrying item locked items

As they stand, they provide a kind of protection that's never useful to me - it's only making them undroppable and untradeable, neither of which is a positive attribute IMO (given that I play several characters on multiple accounts). If I knew once I stuck an item lock on, the item could never be destroyed by any means, I'd happily buy them and put them on the same equips I've nametagged. But it's like... gee, here's a way to waste a dollar.

Isn't that a bit unproductive? If you mean within the account, then that already is possible you can storage locked items.

Locked items are account tradeable (through storage).
I agree with you about the other conditions. I suppose that since locks came about before potential and enhancement, some people were happy to find out those scrolls can still be used on locked items. Enough time has passed to change that now, though.

Item Locks and Hacking - Stereo - 2011-01-25

Yeah, I would like if enhancements could be locked out of items... :x Every time I look at my weapon I want another star.

Didn't know the locks were account tradable. If they still sold permanent ones I might lock up my top/bottom.

Item Locks and Hacking - Phoenix - 2011-01-25

Fun fact, if you're lucky (or cursed for some) to still have perma locked items, sending a ticket in to unlock them will only result in them telling you to wait until the lock expires on its own.

Brilliant.

A year's as good as eternity in Maple now.
It's quite likely that in a year you will have a top and bottom that put your current ones to shame.
And if you don't - 3.1k nx per item per year isn't all that much.
I wish the prices of the shorter-duration ones scaled better. I have some pretty nice items that I would not want to lose, but I do plan to acquire nicer ones (not just a matter of cubing to perfection), so I would like to be able to sell the ones I now have, a few months down the road.

@ TaliaNCo

There is only one remaining problem with who's to blame in regards to child and parent...

By legal definition, until the perpetrator of a criminal action living in a household is of the age of 18, or has been legally emancipated, the responsibility for what the child does, regardless of knowledge, is the sole responsibility of the parent, unless proven otherwise by evidence provided.

In short, a parent can be held responsible for action their child takes, and a parent has no valid excuse for not knowing what their child may, or may not, be involved in.

This doesn't mean a child under the age of 18 can not be tried as an adult for a criminal act and receive a punishment involving time served in juvenile detention pending transfer to a state or federal prison to serve the remainder of the sentence as an adult after the age of 18. And... Internet based criminal activity carries just as harsh a penalty as real life criminal acts.

So question. If NEXON was able to pinpoint people who were hacking accounts they could turn them into the police for investigation?0.o

Depends on the definition of hacking you're using.
Editing the WZ files or modifying the client - Nope.
Packet Editing? - Nope.
Actually breaking into someone's email, or account, unauthorized - Yes.
DOSing another user (DC flood hack) - Yes.

Most of these are interstate violations however which places them in the domain of the FBI Cyber Crimes unit, though.
Guess how much they care about little billy abusing a video game?

Little to none unless its Japan Rolleyes. So to get you straight NEXON finding out who hacked their database and released the accounts info could end up playing a harmonica behind bars?0.o Sorry if you already said that.

I fully aware of the legalities. My point was that you stated that the problem was that parents aren't telling their children "no". I'm guessing you don't have children yet.

If:
  • Nexon cared
  • Reported the incident to appropriate authorities
  • Appropriate authorities cared
  • Sufficient evidence existed to identify the individuals
  • Individuals existed within jurisdiction of said appropriate authorities

Right now I have no intention of replacing either, but you're right, it's possible they'll release new items with ridiculous enough stats that I'd want to replace them. Like say Armor for Atk scrolls.

In terms of anything currently on the market, there's just not a better option I can buy. Both are 3 lined and well scrolled given current scroll availability. (top has 2 hammered slots waiting for 90% vega to come back, bottom has 1 hammer slot which hopefully I can complete with an armor for str - right now it's 31 combined str, so that's up to 37 str if I'm lucky)

I also like the level 100 set visually - by which I mean it's available in purple.
