You know, all of those names are actually fairly normal. If he picked names like "Konata" or "Sakura" or something, I'd understand your urge to lash out. However, all of the names he picked are actually western names, and all of them are actually real names.

The place you get the names from don't really matter. I'm sure your name was influenced by something as well. Parents pick names of their favorite actors, or favorite TV characters on for their children. This isn't unusual, and even if the parents originally got the name from one source, that doesn't mean they'll always associate the name with that source. It's just a name that they heard and liked, like most other names. People don't generally make up their own names to give to their children, they usually pick names they've heard somewhere before and have taken a liking to.

If anything, you should be surprised that he picked some fairly normal names provided the sources you know he got them from. It shows that he didn't just pick names just because of how KAWAII XD the characters attached to them were. It may have been a slight influence, but he surely picked out names that were good on their own.

Aside from that, the names he picked out were all unique while still being normal. Some people like unique names, ones that aren't used much but still sound nice, rather than generic names that are common. Of course, that's a matter of personal choice. What really matters is how personal the name is to the parent, and how acceptable it is for the kid to have that name.

Remilia is a very adorable name. It sounds very classy. Friends can call her Remi. In fact, most of the of Victoria Era names sound very euphonious: Scarlett, Alice, Elisa, Elsie, Sara.

Shame many names from that time are no longer used.

Remilia is a classy name, but the only problem with it is that it's a name ZUN made up (at least, I think he did). So even if it sounds nice, she's the first character that pops up on a Google search.

If that stuff bothers you. I'be seen her name come up in a few kid naming threads though, because it does sound pretty nice in its own way.

That's a horribly disgusting thing to do, and I'm offended by what you suggested.

To be honest, I've never found naming your child after a character a very sound idea. Your child will never conform to what the character is, or what the character might represent to you; unless you force them, but that's an absolutely heinous idea. I find that your accusation is offensive to me, because you assume I'm a sort of disgusting person by nature who would do such a thing.

I didn't choose this name because of a character, I chose these names because I liked them. The place where you discovered the name doesn't really matter. Like my dear friend Kunagisa states, it's just a name I heard and liked; like how all other names are given by a parent to their children. To be honest, my parents thought of my younger brother's name without that much reason other than the fact it was a commonplace name and that it sounded perfect and fitting with our surname. There's nothing wrong with hearing a name and liking it to use as something to consider for your potential children. For an example, I think "Lise" is a beautiful name, and it's a common one in North Europe. "Liselsia" is a tad grandoise for regular use in my opinion, but really beautiful- has a very nice sound to it. Yes, I did discover the name for the first time while I was reading; but I obviously looked into the name to see if it was an acceptable name among western society.

What I want for my child is to give them a name they won't be ashamed of and one that will be accepted by their peers. At the same time, though; I'd obviously consider what sounds like it has a sort of ring to it with my surname in terms of consonant and vowel sounds- and is an overall nice sounding name. For a girl, I personally prefer a soft or elegant sounding name. For a guy, I like a masculine, strong sort of name.

Oh? I thought it was original. I've met a few girls named Remi assumed it was short for something.

Regardless, the Touhou series exploded search engines so it's difficult to trace the name. For instance, searching for Marisa yields Marisa Kirisame while Marisa is indeed a western name. Similarly, googling "Septette" toggles "Septette for the Dead Princess".

Yeah, but along with Marisa Kirisame you also get non-Touhou results. Remilia pretty much brings nothing but Touhou up for every link.

I do know of people being called Remi though. I've no idea what it's short for, but I'm pretty sure it's not Remilia. Just like how Cirno and Flandre are names that ZUN pretty much made up. Even Patchouli at least brings up other results along with the Touhou character (it is the name of a plant after all). Remilia just brings up...Remilia.

It's not just anime characters, Spidey, but I rarely see people on the internet or anywhere really going I'M GONNA NAME MY KID ANGELINA JOLIE. Anyone who names their kid after anyone like that is just as ridiculous and probably shouldn't have kids. When you pre-choose names -- especially ones connected to things you enjoy, you're taking away from that child. When I said a name should be personal I meant it should be something that you feel when you first see the baby.

But giving it an anime name or a stupid name like CLOUD pretty much dooms it to be harassed for the first 13 years of it's life and can take a serious toll on it's self-esteem. It shouldn't be about what you think is cool, it should be about what's best for the child. If you like the name Cloud then go change your name, don't put a kid through that.

Also Isaac and I were talking about this just a couple weeks ago and some really bad(ass) real names include Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii and Number 16 Bus Shelter.

Hmm. With Cirno and Flandre though, their names were obvious enough to tell it was made up for the sake of the game. Patchouli actually threw me off a bit because it's not rare for girls to be named after flowers: Daisy, Rose, Lily, etc. Hell, girls are even named after months and seasons. Patchouli doesn't sound so bad.

A small price to pay to look good. I enjoy relaxing in a pair of jeans/shorts and a shirt as much as the next person, but both male and female fashions from that era cannot be topped by current "fashion".
