Actually, Sarah is right. Rice does have this sort of nasty smell if it's not flavored with anything. Of course I don't know anyone who would eat plain rice but those silly Asians. Even Mexicans flavor their rice before eating it.

Also, if you want REAL Chinese stuff, go to China yes.
Three bowls of rice porridge and three boxes of pork/beef steamed rice rolls (for three people) = 13RMB which = $2..
Restaurants are cheap too, for 10 people, only 160 RMB!, thats $24 USD!

Bear Grylls eats stuff that came from bear droppings.
As for the nasty smell... I have no idea where your particular rice encounters came from, but I know for a fact that if you leave it in the rice cooker for too long, it DOES become nasty and smelly.

Speaking of restaurants in China, holy shyt...
For $100, my family of 7 got their own room, complete with TV and restroom and waiter prep area. The soup came with its own fire, we gorged on seafood, and there was even an international meat dish. Desert was disappointing though, it was "sugar water" (I forget the real name, but that's its english translation).
Offtopic: One hotel I went to had glass walls for the bathroom ;_;

Plain rice can be really fragrant. Jasmine Rice is very tasty on its own but of course the meal would be dull if there were not other appetizers and entrees to complement the rice.
Basmati Rice which is kind of thin and low in glucose, does not have nearly the flavour that other rice may have.
