I got the same problem at Von Bon.
With all the People jumping around with their NX + Totems + Mutant Ribon Pigs + Skill animations, it's hard to see what side he's facing or what he's about to do. Hard to see that 1HKO ball coming.

200 Denaros to upgrade. Fortunately I had just enough (exactly 200) and got to use the Stimulus System to get 10 free Denaros (and a lecture from Maestra Fiametta).
No energy increase, although your energy does get reset when you upgrade.

You can change the MapleStory in-game font, but I forget exactly how. It's been known and done for years now.

You have to get the font you want and rename it to the default font that maple uses (which, i think, is also the font that your computer uses. ariel, i think?).

Regarding the different font I use for maple, I simply changed the default font my computer would use for maple. In my case, I'm using Arial Bold, having replaced the normal Arial with it.
