Oh man, I happened upon a cache of guns in an abandoned human base. Lots of guns. So happy. I really coulda used these back when fighting the first boss... maybe I can use them for the second? They're all armor pen 20 too.

Also, if you're lucky apparently you can find avian sky merchants docked on a planet somewheres, and those guys sell guns too. I have yet to encounter that though. Tonight, begins the great farming session to make the 2nd boss summoner :o

Starbound [Winter Update!] - Razmos - 2013-12-06

I haven't come across any guns at all so far Sad

I found a "Stim Spawner" item that dropped from an Apex Soldier, I put it down on my ship and teleported down to the surface, and when I came back to my ship, I found an Apex Merchant, selling stim packs! Not sure if he is here for good or not, but yeah, awesome.
 Spoiler

I'm wondering if this is how you get NPC's.

EDIT: He's still there after I have teleported back and forth, and he stayed on the ship even when I travelled to another planet. Looks like he is definitely here to stay, my journey just got slightly less lonely.

I ran into the Avian ship last night. They sell a lot of blueprints as well. I ended up spending 5k pixels just buying all of the blueprints they had available.

Just make sure you don't have any weapons equipped when near him. My friend also found a Stim Spawner and he accidentally killed it by attacking with his sword.

Another patch incoming, this one is mainly addressing damage balancing and ore balancing:

List so far...

 Coming tonight – 6 December

I'm getting... bored, one of the biggest complains I have with the game right now is that the universe is too sparse, and far too random. I have yet to find a single tech or ranged weapon for around 25+ planets. Armour, i'm good, since it requires crafting rather than stupid world-gen.

I really doubt i'll be able to beat the UFO boss with what I have now, but i'm getting so frustrated with exploring random planets, spending ages to find absolutely nothing, and then having to mine for more coal to move to a different planet to find nothing once again.

Also it looks like ranged weapons are going to be as OP as they were in Terraria. I've fought some ranged enemies with guns that can shoot faster than I can hit them, who hit for 40-70 damage with each shot and each shot also knocks you back really far. They are such a pain to kill.

UFO boss got nerfed in the latest patch and full Silver armor should make you take minimal damage. I was only taking around 10-15 damage at most pre-nerf. Plus mobs do less damage to you if they're under your "Armor Value Level".

Pfft screw Silver Armor. Leather Armor is vastly superior. It gives warmth and 30% more defense. It's probably going to get nerfed in the very near future, because Leather is far easier to obtain then Silver is, at least in my experience.

Had a hard time getting a weapon for the UFO boss though. Got lucky with a random mini-boss in a Threat 10 area, that I encased in dirt and then beat through the dirt (which will obviously be patched later too, but that thing would have raped me otherwise).

Starbound [Winter Update!] - Razmos - 2013-12-06

Beat the UFO the old fashioned way: Jump buffs from Blue Stim Packs, and a good strong sword.

pineapple guns!

Starbound [Winter Update!] - Phoenix Wright - 2013-12-06

Dirt OP.

It can't move or attack. It's stuck like this. And it's surprisingly easy to do. Make a wide U, make a smaller U at the bottom of the first U, and then hide in the small U. When it tries to dive down into you, jump up and put dirt over it from one of the sides of the U.

Starbound [Winter Update!] - Reako - 2013-12-06

I've made it to the gamma sector. The 2nd boss currently lacks AI and is thus very easy to defeat with a gun. I'm starting to find a *hell* of a lot more gold, and a new mineral, titanium... with a bit of uranium! But still no platinum... I have enough diamonds for the diamond pickaxe, I just need platinum for the previous one to make it! Arrrgh. So frustrating. I also need platinum for my next tier of armor, which is really strong... where IS that stuff?

The only problem is that when it is dead, it can land on you and kill you. My friend had this happen to him.

Yeah, it already got nerfed in the upcoming patch that's going to hit tomorrow.

We just killed the Inactive Robot. peach is level 20 and does 85 touch damage in full Soldier armor (Level 15). We were lucky to get him accidentally stuck on a cliff and just pelted him down from there. The only thing the new workstation gave us was access to the Gamma sector.

More schematics will unlock as you find new materials, I think. I have a strong hunch that Uranium will be necessary for boss #3, which I do know exists. I'm starting to wonder how far basic progression goes in this beta.

Press E next to a campfire. then put the food in the slot, it's the same as smelting.

There's also a "cooking table", but I haven't tried that yet.

Use wood to create a cooking table thing (should be lower on the list of craftable items with the workbench). You start with a few beginning food recipes, but the rest are unlocked though blueprints and material discovery.

Anyways, while exploring a planet earlier, I literally just walked over a bunch of items just sitting on the ground. I assume something happened and the enemy/mini-boss/NPC that was carrying the items died somehow. I got a bunch of iron/silver ore and a few bars, a green flashlight, a decent hammer weapon, and... this...

I don't think anything else I find in this "infinitely procedurally generated" game will ever top this mask. I will wear it until the end of time.

The current patch notes mention a dumb and silly way to quickly advance through Tiers 4 - 10. I'm guessing T10 / T11 is the highest right now. The dumb and silly way is apparently the bosses drop the full tier armor of the next tier (Boss #3 drops the full upgraded T4 armor).

Starbound [Winter Update!] - Reako - 2013-12-06

Platinum! I have struck PLATINUM! YESSSSS. Just barely over enough for a platinum pickaxe, which I immediately turned into a diamond pickaxe. Took all of my pixels too. I still have yet to find diamonds underground, but a few settlements had 5 in a box, followed by 5 more, thus the upgrade. I am so happy right now. Mining just got way easier.

http://playstarbound.com/coming-in-a-few-days-sorry-for-the-delay/

Tiy Wrote:Ok guys so we decided to make this update a lot bigger. It’s going to take a day or two to complete and I wanted to explain exactly what we’re doing with the balance of the game to open it up for discussion.

Currently the damage system in Starbound is built around an armor penetration system. This system was put in place to account for the 100 planet levels, 100 monster levels and so on. Whilst the system works it leads to a difficulty curve that can be confusing to navigate as well as stats that are a little more difficult to understand. (A weapon that does 40 damage, only does 40 damage to a monster of the same level as the weapon. Otherwise as the distance between armor penetration/armor level grows the damage increases/decreases.)

It’s hard to know exactly how much damage your weapon will do to any given monster and it’s difficult to know which of two weapons is the most effective.

Another problem with this system is items that do a static amount of damage. For example in the current alpha sector it’s possible to find throwing daggers with 5 armor penetration. These daggers are extremely powerful in the lower half of the tier but near useless in the upper half.

When working with 100 levels, without the armor penetration system you end up with absurd damage/health values that are far too big to be manageable and that’s the reason this system was originally in place.

So over this weekend we’re going to work on the solution to this problem. We’re going to reduce the number of planet levels from 100, to 10. *This is not a decrease in the amount of content, it’s simply a change to how leveling functions*. The smaller number of levels means that we can remove armor penetration entirely and simplify weapon damage. You’ll be able to directly compare weapon DPS which will now appear on the weapons tooltip. Armor will become easier to understand and will gain additional buffs, such as increasing player max health. We’re also now able to remove armor from monsters and simply give more powerful monsters more health, this way you always know how much damage your weapon will do.

Monsters will no longer have a level, instead monsters will be given an easy/medium/hard marker, that shows you how difficult a monster is in the context of the sector it’s in. For example, a hard monster in sector 1 will be roughly the same strength as an easy monster in sector 2. The difficulty of monsters will increase the lower you dig, but so will the rewards.

Items with a static amount of damage will be manually balanced and useful for the entire sector you find them on. Given that the range of health difference will be lower now, we can ensure that items such as throwing daggers will be useful for the entire sector. We’re also able to make sure that when you craft the best armor in a sector, you’ll be in good shape for the next sector. By ensuring that the hardest monsters in sector 1 match the easiest monsters in sector 2, you’ll be able to progress without having to face instakills on either side.

I suspect this game will drastically improve the balance of the game and make the extra wait worth it.

Coming along with this update will be a bunch of bug fixes and some new content.

Shortly after this update we’ll be adding a complete sector 4, delta sector.

This update will probably require a character reset (I’m sorry! Beta Sad )

Give us your thoughts guys

Unfortunate, but not altogether unexpected. We WERE told going into this beta that there will be the occasional player wipe. That's fine though, this new system they want to implement sounds more understandable and user friendly. I'm also confident in my ability to get caught back up as needed. Hope those people I gave weapons to had some fun with em...
