DeanNim Wrote:then they should get a clue ? i mean literally all the games that have ever went viral were games that are simple to play... Temple run, Candy Crush, Angry birds... even Draw Something. its not a surprise that Flappy bird made it big, given the history of mobile games that have went viral before.

Tons of shi'tty "simple" games are made and released every day on mobile platforms. If it was anything other than dumb luck, it wouldn't have happened randomly over 9 months after he released the game.

Indie devs shouldn't sell out and start making complete turds just to "get a clue" in the vain hope that they can be the one of a hundred pomegranatety games released any given week that maybe one a month catches on for no discernible reason. (And then gets 20 clones of its own in a couple of days)

Mentalist Wrote:When a company like Nintendo is involved and in the popularity of such a game that everyone likes, they're not going to be willing to tarnish their name in the public's eye and so they made Dong Nguyen take down the game due to legal issues but make it look like he took it down out of his own free will. Just because he said no legal issues doesn't mean he didn't receive them, he may have except this was kept super private so both parties don't lose face.

Are you kidding? Nintendo makes people take down stuff infringing them publicly fairly often.

Then what do you suggest is the real reason Dong Nguyen took down the game from the App Store?

Fed up with the internets bullshit seems totally reasonable to me.

If both he and nintendo have denied it being legal action, when there are plenty of examples of them doing it publically, like so

then it's on you to prove they did it despite saying otherwise.

It just feels unlikely that someone values internet bullshit higher than 50k profit a day.

Ok, what if you just started getting bank transfers for $1,500,000 every month and they said "it's for a project you did", and all you remember is that you spent 2 hours on it, got bored, and uploaded to the internet?

Unless you're exceptionally naive you'd probably be a little freaked out by that. Would you start spending it?

A small volume of "your app is too hard!" is fine... very large numbers appearing in your bank account is really sketchy.

"your app is too hard" is putting it nicely.

Dong (as if his name helped matters) was getting all sorts of slander, up to and including death threats (I'm told anyway, hard to seperate the death threats from the ones he's getting now for taking it down...). Not to mention that, literally everyone would be aware of who he is, as he used his real name when he uploaded the game (expecting it to amount to nothing).

No doubt he was getting harassed for money in real life too.

Assuming he has all of his paperworks (taxes and actually owning a company), it would all be legit after he pays his taxes, so yes, I would start spending it.

Well, I'm speaking mostly of the earlier tweets that he was replying to.

Once it gets as big as Flappy Bird did I wouldn't want to have to deal with the userbase all by myself either. And maybe he's not the type to hire a staff...

The creator probably wanted to quit while he's ahead and not receive further flak for stuff like this on top of everything else.

Should call it Fappy Bird instead of Bikini Jetpack.

Why does a fake news article have any relevance though?

This is what i find amazing about this whole situation. The amount of money people are willing to spend on a damn cellphone with the game downloaded on it. I really hope most these bids are fake.

Yeah, I actually saw someone seriously selling one on facebook. It is cheaper and easier just to hack it on to your device.

The next Phil Fish.
Except this time it's someone who wasn't a total douche.

People can be ruthless.
I kind of understand where he's coming from.

I can completely understand his reasoning, but I hope he learned a lesson: There's a reason why developers do not respond directly to every little comment made by players. They will drive you insane, they will ask for the impractical and illogical, and overall they cause headaches far larger than they are worth.

Yeah, there's the occasional good question or topic that would be nice if they respond, and if they do that's great. However, as the developer, taking the time, energy, and thought into responding to EVERY comment made by players is just simply bad for your health, especially if you are a sole developer of a game that went viral.
