Why do we play Maplestory? - Niernen - 2013-10-07 Because it is one of the few 2d mmos and requires little skill (less than most 3d mmo). Why do we play Maplestory? - kimicatdemon - 2013-10-07 I'm with Alloy... I like Maplestory, but I don't ever try to rush to the top level or try to beat high level bosses. I'm hardly interested in high leveled armor... The only time I jump on Maplestory is if there is a big event going on that catches my eye, or if one of my friends are on and want to hang out. I grind a little, but only for maybe an hour or two... three at best. Simply put, Maplestory isn't a game I run to every day to play. I like the game, yes, but there are some very big flaws in the actual game set up. Being unable to enjoy end game content without being funded is one of these many flaws. At this point, I consider items a bigger reward than a level up, but even then, certain rare items end up costing NX too... While I agree in part with your statement I want to just play devil's advocate and say that on the other side of things there could be those people who just don't enjoy leveling after a certain point and would just rather PQ with others for fun, or level up their trait skills/make items to sell, or just be a mercher. My point being is that yeah the main idea of the game is that you level up and increase your skills but again that's only 1 aspect to the game. Though I have to say I am one of those people who doesn't see the point if you aren't going to aim for a high level and good gear...but again, just my mindset and I respect other peoples' choices in how they play the game. PQs have their level restrictions. Restricting yourself to a certain level restricts you to certain PQs. Levelling up traits requires... uh well I guess charm can only effectively be increased through NX, and ambition through bossing? As for making items to sell... well, most worthwhile craftable items are easier and cheaper to get from boss drops than to actually spend time and effort collecting the ingredients to make them (this of course is an issue that should be addressed and rectified by the developers) And I'm not even going to deal with the crazy crap that deals with merchanting here. If you insist we can take this elsewhere. I guess, ultimately, while it's "only one aspect of the game", it helps you with those other aspects of the game. You don't have to bring skill into it... it's just plain one of the few 2d MMOs. The stand-in-a-spot-attacking bosses don't require much skill, but there are things in MS that not every player can do (regardless of funding) For me, MS has never had an endgame grind that encouraged me to be at the top levels. I have a bunch of level 170-180 characters, none of which can make grinding HoH a fun use of time. The only time I've been among the top level group of players was when Ludi came out and suddenly the highest grinding mob was from Zombies (7x) to Grims (good up to 10x) Areas with level restrictions (like future Henesys/Perion, minimum level of 160/190) are discouraging - no matter how strong you are, if you're level 174, you have to spend 16 more levels on HoH before you can see the new content. If you're level 130 you need to grind 30 more levels to even visit Future Henesys. They killed the best part of high level content, which is "go there when you're too weak and get slaughtered after taking down a single mob" Why do we play Maplestory? - Foxino - 2013-10-07 I had a few reasons for playing.. Mostly for friends and the game itself is artistically beautiful. But i'm quite against the amount of real money required to play the game to it's fullest. Why do we play Maplestory? - Declaimed - 2013-10-07 Why I played: -Playerbase with similar interests (anime, etc) -My friends outside of the game/IRL were playing it (quite intensely) -Appealed to me at the time I began playing/I fit the target audience -I made friends in-game that I didn't want to abandon -The NX seemed reasonable back then: no gach, no 2X, and no potential (just clothing) -I actually liked the music -It was my first MMO, so the very concept intrigued me -The events were [more] fun [to me](Lunar wish tickets/etc) -PQs were much more active, and they actually worked (APQ, CWKPQ) -It introduced me to other communities Why I don't play it anymore: -Surplus of cash based items that give an unfair advantage to those who invest in them -Too many characters, unending balance patches -Glitch ridden, illogical ban system -Updates don't focus on the things I'd like them to be focusing on -A larger portion of the community has become hostile/ill-mannered/unfriendly (likely due to its growth since launch; Its harder to avoid the bad ones when your odds of running into them are that much greater) -It won't even run consistently for me in the first place (I get some error with a gigantic number attached to it when I try to play on my laptop. Too lazy to check what error it is at this point) -I've grown tired of being called weak, and don't feel like spending the money needed to remedy the problem -Most or all of my friends have quit the game Why I still check updates/the game occasionally: -To see if anything has changed, or will change -To see if broken things that were preventing me from playing certain portions of the game are fixed -To see if any of my old friends have returned (they do, occasionally) -Nostalgia -For the hell of it Why do we play Maplestory? - Dark Link - 2013-10-07 I used to play cause old internet friends played and my two sisters played it, but they've all quit and the game's direction of "Pay or get fucked", in a game with very little endgame in the first place, was the main culprit of why they all left, which ended up with me leaving as well. In the end I locked my two main accounts with HotSpot and left it at that. If I ain't playing those accounts anymore, no one will. Why do we play Maplestory? - SoR0XaS - 2013-10-07 Back in 2007, Maple appealed to me, as a kid (played a lv21 magician). Then i quitted for a while and came back this year. A lot of things have changed. Say, for example, I came back at the end of Legends and was "rainbow mouthing" at DS since I had NEVER seen a unique class like DS before. But now, I feel like MSEA isn't worth to invest in. Too much cubes here, + overly expensive cash items, and P2W method. And they keep adding new overpowered S2 classes (AB, Lumi, kaiser, DA, xenon). Partly why I'm less active. Waiting for RED. Why do we play Maplestory? - Stereo - 2013-10-07 xparasite9 Wrote:How do you feel about the current accuracy system? Does it even do anything? I haven't heard of anyone missing because their acc was too low. The dumbing down of that and secondary stats in general (haha equipment requiring stats? nonsense) is sort of a strange change. Why do we play Maplestory? - CakesXD - 2013-10-07 Sadly, Maple is the only MMORPG that I've played in the past 7-8 years that has stood the test of time (Trickster: closed, 2Moons/Dekaron: hacked (thanks NexonEU, had zero problems with Acclaim), FlyFF: bored after 2 weeks, etc.). It does well as a time (and money) sink, and it's the only means of communicating with one friend that I have. The music and artwork are lovely, but as time passes, I find myself with less and less reason to log on. Why do we play Maplestory? - byakugan - 2013-10-07 Because I've always been a sucker for platformers and side scrollers. Maplestory in its core is a great game, I'm talking about the gameplay, the music, the graphics... it is nexon's business model and bad managing of the game's issues which's made many of us wonder that same question. Why do we play Maplestory? - Words - 2013-10-07 I used to play because it was less time consuming than WoW. I spent a lot of time playing MS but not nearly as much as WoW. When it comes to MS the only grindy thing there is is leveling, and since you can set up 4 hours a day you just spend those 4 hours, while WoW there are many many interesting things to do so the grinds could last twice as much or even more. Character cute looks was the main reason that kept me coming back, which is stupid... but I'm stupid
Why do we play Maplestory? - Mandalay - 2013-10-07 Personally, one of the biggest wake-up calls to "Why am I still playing this?" was the attendance events. It made me realize how time-consuming everything is on Maple - to the point that Maple now feels like a part-time job (especially if you want to be/stay funded). The community kept me around but with the advent of Skype and social media making it easier to keep in contact with people, I can't bring myself to play anymore. More or less, Maple feels more like a 5 GB chatting program now. I've never felt like I've gotten my money's worth on anything in Maple so I always advise people not to spend money on this game. Why do we play Maplestory? - LegendGospel - 2013-10-07 If you play this game to have 2m range damage, or to solo the latest end-game bosses, you're up for disappointment, or have way too much money in hands. I play for what I can do, and sorta enjoy that. While buying 1 piece of Root Abyss equipment would make me broke, I have full empress sets on multiple characters. I generally do minor bosses and don't mind much the rest. Why do we play Maplestory? - MariettaRC - 2013-10-07 The reasons I played... First, it was because my lady played with me. We made great friends, who over time had slowly left the game, made and raised a great guild together (which I admit have been heavily neglecting now and I'm very awful about that... I'm sorry), and then she quit but I kept playing. What kept me going was the art, the (good) people and the customization. You had to spend NX for outfits, and I didn't mind that. In fact, I liked spending NX on cosmetic stuff. I was never the type to change my hair/face on a weekly basis (I go with one look and stick with it), but I loved going "Well, this outfit's about to expire... let's see what combination looks good for the next three months!" And even when I had no NX, I took outfits available in-game and wore them around when I wasn't training (Anvils still the best and only thing I would ever even spend NX on with zero regrets, those were easily Nexon's best invention). Of course, then came the time when I could no longer get NX because I had my own bills to pay, which made permanent NX a godsend. But I still had fun leveling, being with friends... leveling with friends, doing party quests that required actual teamwork and effort (RIP CWKPQ), helping out those who needed something I could help out with. I was slow but I was accomplishing stuff. I was a firm believer in playing legitimately and was highly respected for it. I had always wanted to fight the big bosses at the time, Zakum and Horntail, but was never high enough to do so, but I would always try my best to get up there so I could join in the epic boss battles. But then potential and such came along and the fun of the game started to slowly dwindle away. The big bosses got easy enough to the point where big groups of organized people were unnecessary and aren't even considered big anymore. Even bigger bosses showed up and it required an insane amount of power that could only be met with NX (even if you spent 0 dollars on NX, the point that NX was needed still stands) just to be able to stand a chance. I had finally gotten my chance to fight large bosses with a group of respectable people on a regular basis, like I had always wanted. It was a bi-weekly Empress run with an always-full expedition of people who are completely anti-hacker, anti-dupe, legit. But only a very small number of them was truly decked out in range. I had a great time in those expeditions, and heck, I would keep trying with them if I hadn't stopped playing because it was fun and they're wonderful people... but not once were we able to defeat Empress. We got close a few times, but in all of the expeditions I'd gone, not one of them were successful. Full expedition with mostly level 200s and no success. And yet there are people soloing/duo-ing/what have you because they're even more stacked in damage than all of us combined (not to mention duped items but that's another thing altogether). Really said a lot about what the game demands from people in order to even progress in the end-game. Once a level cap increase was announced, along with revamps that would turn my character into a complete stranger, I knew I was done. The game I once knew and loved is gone because it'd drifted into something different. But as long as it makes money, it works, right? Why do we play Maplestory? - hadriel - 2013-10-07 I stopped hardcore playing Maple a few years back, now I play max 2 hours a day, sometimes I don't bother or am too tired from work. But even then and now I have not spent a single cent on the game. I have a decent number of high levelled characters with eq decent enough to let me solo most low-mid tier bosses (assuming I don't DC). Events were my main source of meso income, but I've never really been considered rich at any point of time should I compare myself with people who spend NX or go for top-tier boss expeditions. Mostly because I'm a lone wolf, I occasionally PQ but otherwise I don't party. Don't downplay the existence of players like me. Hadriel Why do we play Maplestory? - Endgame - 2013-10-07 For me, it is entirely a matter of having nothing else to do. I hate Maple Story. I truly do. But when I was exposed to it back in Middle School, it corrupted a part of my soul, and now whenever other games fail me, that part of my soul pulls me back to Maple Story. And it doesn't help that there's ALWAYS something to do in Maple Story, because of all the grinding. There's still plenty of things I could do to improve my characters without spending money on the game! I've given up on console/handheld games for various reasons. Vindictus is good until you get to the endgame, which I have on the three characters I could stand to play that far, then it falls apart. (Think Maple Story's endgame of pay2win in order, except that it's moreso the elitist community pushing you to get gear that good before they'll even let you into their party rather than the developers, although they certainly encourage it with certain bosses.) Elsword I latched myself onto for a while, but the direction the game has been taking in the korean version is downright horrible (Long story short: They're trying to make the game more like Maple Story! They even copied Potential! No, really!), and led to me quitting. (Plus, the NA host Kill3rCombo is downright terrible. Think Nexon NA is bad? HA! Try slow updates, the Stamina system kept in while all the other kMMOs get rid of theirs, not fixing well known glitches, skipping weekly maintenance, etc.) Diablo 3, well, it's more rewarding to use the Auction House than to actually farm gear right now. The expansion coming out next year shows promise though. And none of the other games interest me enough. And believe me, I've tried TONS of them. So it all leads back to Maple Story. I refuse to spend money on the game, so I think you know how well THAT goes. The class I've chosen to main is Hero. For some reason, it took Wizet until RED to realize how horrible the whole skill books from bosses to unlock skills concept is. Advanced Combo Attack is the main source of Hero's damage. Yeah..... his damage is going to skyrocket after RED though, but that's not going to be for another two months. (GMS has been consistently 5 months behind KMS.) Angelic Buster, my second favorite class? Also bad at Evolving World, the only viable leveling spot for 120+..... Granted, Wizet IS slowly learning and trying to improve the game. (RED has tons of improvements. Bye bye horrible Skill Book system.) But no matter what they do, it will always be the same old boring grindfest that some of us just can't escape. We are damned souls, eternally bound to this prison..... |
