On the other hand, if someone offers to sell you a brand new car for $500 cash, you really shouldn't be surprised when it turns out to be stolen.

Nexons Notice to Tyrant Gear - Dark Link - 2012-12-11

Nexon's already handing out the Perma Bans. Quite a few of people who exploited this got their accounts shut down, and there's more being shut down as of right now.

Nexons Notice to Tyrant Gear - Declaimed - 2012-12-11

I still maintain that its Nexon's fault for allowing the items into the game. I'm just tired of it, honestly. If they don't want the items circulating, they shouldn't have let the items into the game in the first place. This whole "Oh its okay, we'll just delete it later" pomegranate really annoys me. Its been the running philosophy ever since the Chaos patch, or even earlier.

Are you being serious? Do you honestly think Nexon can just see into the future and know what's going to be exploited next and how the exploit will work? You have absolutely no idea how this game is coded, and what goes on in its inner workings. There is no "It shouldn't happen in the first place". There's no REAL way to absolutely prevent this pomegranate from happening. Get over it, and get over yourself. Anyone caught with these deserves their ban, ignorance or not. Anyone with that kind of money should know to be smarter about their purchases.

Nexons Notice to Tyrant Gear - Declaimed - 2012-12-11

Actually, I'm entirely serious. You give far too much credit to a corporation whose job is to properly debug and test their material before releasing it to millions of people. ESPECIALLY one with the kinds of money that Nexon has at its disposal. Mind you, this is not a one time offense. This exact same situation has been running for well over two years now, with exploits and hacks so potent and numerous that the game itself has withered into a state of broken decay. What are these people paid to do, anyway? Its okay that this happens on a daily basis? Regardless of how stupid or backwards people may be in purchasing the illegitimate items, for people to have the chance to flood the market with them and subsequently have Nexon follow up with rollbacks and item purges so frequently is unacceptable.

PS, you have no idea how the game is "coded" yourself, so that argument bares no ground.

Nexons Notice to Tyrant Gear - Justin - 2012-12-11

I'm not denying that Nexon needs to do a better job of coding their game, but you're expecting 100% protection against anything, ever. Which isn't going to happen. Hackers have far too much money to be made off of this game to just up and leave, because of idiot players who are willing to drop raw USD for hacked ass equips.

But see, this is where you're misunderstanding. I don't expect perfection, no, of course not. But I do expect the proper precautions to be taken against what is essentially the same epidemic that has been plaguing the game for over 20+ patches.

You cannot in good faith tell me that its impossible to stop people from generating illicit items. Not hard, mind you, but impossible. After all, for it to have not to have been dealt with by this point in time, it would HAVE to be an impossible feat to be excusable. From the hundreds of white scrolls that were in the market, to the Chaos Scroll exploit of the chaos patch, to the mass duping thats been going on in the past year compounded by the generation of ANY item that was seen a while back (This included game master items), this trick of item generation and duplication has become a theme, and isn't a new problem going for the development team. They've known about it, and they've claimed to have fixed it not one, not two, but many times. My main criticism is that they can't seem to get it right, ever. No game have I played other than this one where it seems to be so hair-rippingly difficult to keep a player from making items clone themselves or even appear from thin air.

>Addresses the situation approrpriately, and in a timely manner
>OH MY GOD NEXON IS SO INCOMPETENT THEY CAN'T EVEN STOP PACKET EXPLOITS OH MY FUCKING GOD THEY NEED TO FIRE SOMEONE RGRgrgrgRGR

How could Nexon have reasonably predicted that there was going to be a packet exploit for an event that was not released on KMS (to my knowledge?) and hadn't received much hype at all? I understand your point, Nexon does need to do a better job at at least trying to stop exploits, and that's so true, but in this case, I don't believe there's much they could have done.

Also, why does MapleStory have trouble with hackers? It's profitable. If it weren't profitable (ie., a smaller game, a newer game (?)), then it'd probably be less problematic.

Its the exact same situation affecting the exact same event. That is why I expect them to know.

Its as if they learn nothing. There isn't any excuse that I can think of that would allow them to let this go on the way that it has been. They are aware of item duplication and generation efforts in the darker areas of the game's community, they understand how items are generated and how they are duplicated, and they know the methods through which to alter the system in order to prevent such things from happening. The fact that White Scrolls were duplicated for as long as they were while Nexon sat back saying "Don't worry everyone, we've fixed the duping now" is enough for me to discredit their efforts.

My argument isn't that they arn't fixing exploits in a timely manner.

My argument is that they arn't fixing what is arguably the SAME exploit that has been there forever. And if it is true that variants exist, then take caution to the ways that they work, and test appropriately. Don't throw caution to the wind and expect all to be fine when the economy implodes.

Nexons Notice to Tyrant Gear - Aflac - 2012-12-11

Someone said they had mules that got banned that never even did the exploit, so here's to hoping they chain-ban everyone who was dumb enough to try this. I hope they do a thorough job of cleaning up, too.

the problem is that there is people that actually think those capes are legit... The first time saw one i thought that they were from a gacha event, 5 mins after that i realized they were duped/exploited Tongue

Good luck effectively, and cost efficiently, protecting your game against packet hacks.

Nexons Notice to Tyrant Gear - Eliseo - 2012-12-11

I think it's quite stupid to defend the exploiters just because of Nexon's inability to prevent all possible exploits.

Just because the door of a car is unlocked doesn't mean you need to steal it. Aren't this values people grow up with?

Its what I'm going to school for, what I study, and am doing pretty well in. No need to assume that I'm completely in the dark.

Guys, you don't have to like my opinion. This is a discussion. I have my own views on how things are working. If you don't agree, thats great! Theres every possibility in the world that I'm wrong. I'm not flawless. Thats not justification to rip my head off for it. PS: "Snip the horsesh'it" does not make you look cool. Sorry man.

Wasn't intending for it to. You just sound like you have a thumb up your ass. Then again a lot of people in this thread do.

You can't expect a group to not come out with something new, and then test it X amount of times to find every single issue. There will always be something exploitable in a game. All it takes is one person to fiddle with something long enough to find it. Although Nexon's lab monkeys do find bugs an fix them. You can't expect them to be perfect, it's impossible.

Jamesie Wrote:Good luck effectively, and cost efficiently, protecting your game against packet hacks.

Huh?
It's really very simple: validate every packet you receive.
Yes, it means checking every field has a legal value. A sequence of trivial "if"s that any beginning programmer can do.
What's this "effectively and cost efficiently"? It's bloody essential to do it. They know hackers have packet editors, they know that these hackers will attempt to distort any packet, especially those that contain a reward item ID, for their own purposes.
But they keep leaving themselves wide open to exploits that are essentially identical to previous ones.
Is cleaning up after an exploit really more effective and cost efficient than preventing it in the first place?

I'm inclined to think the first one was kidding, the rest can go burn in a fire hacked to higher temperatures.

terribad programmer here confirming this, you could even make it into an errorCheck function

As a note to everyone, Zaleros didn't exploit. He just commented as-a-matter-of-fact-ly because Felicide is pretty notorious.

I don't think anyone even accused him, or had a reason to, but okay.
