SP's opinion? - SaptaZapta - 2012-12-01

Tay Wrote:Ok that was rather quick, 12 vs 1. Here's the back story:

The left is created by me. The right was designed by the head of custom floral for Michaels and then massively produced in China. There are many pieces that have been premade, they all look kind of weird though some are quite nice. Most of them have this weird fruit fetish going on, some even have artichokes in them which confuses me. The introduction of the premades has just gotten me worried that at one point my job will be phased out, that if they sell well enough why would Michaels need to employ me when they can have Jody design and mass produce? Just a little worried, needed some backing up from the public to reassure myself that my designs are good.

Thanks everyone! Smile

Does Michael's employ other kinds of artists or crafters full time? Painters, beaders, knitters, scrapbookers, etc, that do what you do: create finished pieces using the materials the chain sells, for use as store decoration or for sale, as is or as custom orders?

If they do, you probably don't need to worry about your job being phased out. If they don't... yeah, should wonder when they'll decide they don't need floral designers either.

But, you don't need to worry too much. With your skill I'm sure you could find better employment, should you need it. (And learning to handle live flowers won't hurt).

Good luck.
