Not to mention the fact that these contests are entirely opt-in and clearly not intended for people who won't enjoy the process.
To win the contest you're going to have to make everything yourself, which is what I think he was saying. Though if anyone even has the baking potential to do that, and will just buy gingerbread kits and draw on them, different story.

I helped my mom make the gingerbread dough from scratch. We made ~10 houses; we've had a gingerbread house party every year the weekend before Christmas for as long as I can remember.
