Voyagers are almost reaching the outer space if you so put it. Granted, it's still not out of our Solar System yet, but we're being introduced to something other than just the Sun for the first time.

..We spend billions of dollars on space exploration, just curious to find out what's out there, when our own world is so messed up. Those billions of dollars would go a long way in eradicating poverty (which of course is much too idealistic, but you see my point)

True, but if we didn't spend those billions of dollars on space exploration, we'd never come to realize about any potential life form or other habitable planets out there. What we bring forth now could might as well help out the next generation and so forth.
