Well, for physical attackers, it really does depend. Wep. attack adds more damage, but STR adds HP, DEX adds avoidability and accuracy, and LUK adds... hands. Although if you're going ___-less, Wep. Attack>Stats all the time, as you're going for damage anyway.
If you're a magician, 1 INT=1 Magic Attack, however INT adds magic defense as well. Therefore, INT>Magic Attack.

As for INT, it might also be worth mentioning that every 10 INT adds 1 MP, so that is another reason why it is better than Magic Attack.

Well I can see why people would make that mistake. Maple Story doesn't make sense most of the time.

STR does not add MP. A bunch of islanders who went Pure STR, Hybrid, and Pure DEX have compared their HP/MP levels. The only difference is that the Pure DEX have a bit more MP (it was believed that STR reduced your normal MP gain by just a bit; go figure).
Besides, warriors would have even MORE HP if that was the case, and I highly doubt bowmen would have such a hard time with HP. :X
