To clarify... PEMDAS heirarchy specifies 1) parenthesis, 2) exponents, 3) multiplication and division left-to-right, 4) addition and subtraction left-to-right.

I believe that was 5th grade for me, so just before middle school.
I learned the order of operations in 3rd grade. Parenthesis means you process everything inside the parenthesis. The 2 is clearly outside the parenthesis.

Guys, if any of you got a real calculator in which you can write a whole expression before hitting "=", I invite you to write these two expressions on your calculators and come tell me what they say:
48/2(9+3) and 48/2*(9+3)
Mine gives 2 and 288, respectively.
That "2" in front of the parenthesis works as a coefficient, therefore the whole expression is considered the denominator of what comes above it, the result is different if there was really a multiplication sign in there.
PS: I'm not sure if people are discussing this seriously or just trolling around since this is the funhouse... I'll stop here.

The problem lies with the person who wrote out the mathematical equation. 48/2(9+3) is 48/2*(9+3), not 48/(2(9+3). ggnorere

My parents use the top one for... something. I don't know what.
The bottom left calculator is my TI-30X IIS, what I use for calculus. The bottom right is my lovely TI-84 Plus, which I used in the entirety of high school (excluding now, when I only use it to check answers).
I used to have a TI-83, but I gave it to a friend because those calculators are friggin' expensive.
