For Maple, yes. Not for everything that uses Pando. I can think of a dozen games off the top of my head that leave it as the only option.

For those who keep Skype on, that program is doing the same thing.

 Spoiler

So either go into options and disable it or quit Skype while playing games.

Trojan Horse malware performs silent installations of software from remote sources and relays back information while preventing itself from being uninstalled by masking as a legit program. Pando doesn't do this either. Sorry Eos, but I do know my malware.

There are the 5 basic forms of malware...

Virus - hides in a file and runs as a secondary hidden operational code and duplicates itself usually attaching to various outgoing protocols like e-mail, P2P, and other software.
Trojan - masks itself as legit software while performing silent actions without user's knowledge usually downloading viruses and other malware while preventing it's own removal by changing registry settings, disabling software, and other malicious actions.
Worm - duplicates on a network by spreading itself across communication protocols, and isn't an actual program like a virus or trojan.
Keylogger - runs as a silent program, usually as a virus, trojan, or worm and relays keystrokes or logs back to a database.
Backdoor - creates a hidden account on a computer with advanced privileges and allows an attacker to gain access to a system or control of it remotely.

This doesn't even come close to malware by any definition, even by CompTIA's Security + standards.

The closest thing it comes to is an Semi-Automated downloader with installer and silent P2P service. Pando even has a Control Panel applet to regulate it's usage. It even has registry keys you can turn on or off with MSCONFIG or any other Startup editor like CCleaner or Spybot S&D.

BTW... in comparison to Skype, Skype is actually more dangerous to your PC as it leaves an open communication port with full permission access anyone who could get your Skype number.

If this was malware (by any definition legal or illegal) Spybot S&D, MalwareBytes, and other firms would have published some type of article on it and blocked it or offered a removal tool. So far they haven't...

People just get paranoid for no reason. Learn to manager your PC the right way and have the right protection software and you have nothing to worry about. Plus, shouldn't you always check and log everything you do to your PC anyway? I mean seriously, if you know what did and didn't get installed maybe you'd know what stuff comes bundled with other software.

Plus Nexon actually offered an option for a direct download and it DOES notify you it is being installed.

I never see people complaining over all the stuff that gets silently installed with iTunes without their knowledge... that is until I've shown them.

yeah can't believe so many people use itunes. Bloatware to the max.

Uninstalled. I don't remember a notice about Pando when Maplestory was installed.

I dislike itunes because of all that stuff. Realplayer is bad too.

Quote:Malware — n
a computer program designed specifically to damage or disrupt a system, such as a virus

Funny, but a background service with no interface that's designed to utilize your bandwidth without you noticing or being able to control it or throttle it pretty much meets that definition. No version of Pando I've ever had to gut from my system has included this "control panel" applet you claim exists. It wasn't even uncommon for antiviruses to flag PMB as a trojan based on it's behavior.

Everything is about perspective Jamie, and news flash - Yours doesn't define reality. Regardless of how "helpful" a program was intended to be it can still be malware when it's doing things the end user doesn't want it to, by design.

I'll post a screenshot when I get a chance to, and please stay on topic Eosian. This a tech discussion, not a debate of ethics and other things.Rolleyes

And yes, Ray iTunes does install a massive amoutn of bloatware like Bonjour, Quicktime, and Apple Software Updater to say the least. BTW, for anyone needing an alternative to iTunes with less bloat, try SongBird. It's a lot smaller of a download, and uses an MP3 purchasing website as well, plus MP3s are less problematic finding burning software that's compatible with the format.

Didn't know about either one of these - thanks for posting the thread. Hopefully things will run better now.

I spotted something else in my List of Programs while uninstalling Pando, and decided to do a little research.

It seems that Akamai NetSession Interface does the same thing as Pando. According to Akamai's FAQ page, it also utilises P2P technology.

Just wanted to share. Can anyone confirm this?

For anyone who wants to see PMB and similar programs effect on their bandwidth, or find apps running you may not realize are even using your bandwidth, http://www.netlimiter.com/

The free version lets you see bandwidth by application running. The pay version lets you actually control the bandwidth available to each app.

Did Nexon remove Netlimiter of the hack programs list?

They put it on the illegal 3rd party program list like 2 years ago... I never installed it ever again because Maple wouldn't start with it... :/

That's a bizarre item to put on the hack list.
What could you even do with it? Lag the client? :f6:

Definitely. + Smuggling isn't even an issue anymore. Whats there to smuggle? Protector rocks? Lol.

@Devil.
Game runs fine w/ Netlimiter 3 on Windows 7. No hiccups.

The ease with which this slipped by is disturbing....

Definitely going to get the free version. Paranoia and rage will not let me skip it. Paying for it... eh. I might just pirate it, pardon the irony.
