The first thing that came to my mind was they somehow started tracing where items on a character go, so it's possible to trace back an item to the owner if they ever get hacked. I was disappoint, but this is a step in the right direction in caring about Maple's security.

No, "tracer" is synonymous with a "traceback" error. It will allow Nexon to see the final function which threw an exception, and a callback tree that steps function calls all the way back to WinMain to determine how that control branch is being reached. You guys are going to notice the game is going to be slower, though, while this is in effect.

so it doesn't play nice with 64 bit and will slow the game down? oh goody. Tongue

For now, but sounds like a crucial step to a much better client.

Wow,

Mindblown.

Hope it has at least a sliver more usefulness than our lovely GMs.

*DC* Send in report DC'd at Zakum

*restart* -walks around for 15 minutes in FM-

*DC*
Send in report about DCing ranndomly in FM

Repeat above every 15-30 minutes.

This will get slightly annoying after a while.

Just think how the developers will feel, being flooded with this stuff.

Hopefully it will motivate them to actually solve something, though.

Also, I am wondering whether eTracer will be triggered when the client closes-but-doesn't-exit (and you have to terminate it from the task manager before you can run Maple again). I have a funny feeling it won't, and then when it's killed the stack trace will be irrelevant.

Oh god I hate this issue. 50% of the time I close MS the process is still running, and it slows my computer down. I'll forget to terminate the process, put my computer on standby overnight, come back the next day and wonder why the hell I'm lagging while running other programs, and I open up Task Manager and see MapleStory.exe still sitting there eating 150mb of RAM.

I have a few curious questions. Would this help detect people doing DC hacks or something? especially people that crashes the map or lag spams you out through packets or something?

Possibly, if the stack trace includes variable values, and one of those values is the user-id of the hacker. I wouldn't count on it though.
It will help figure out how various dc hacks work, but as far as I know that is not a mystery in the first place.

Hm
Just disconnected at random, standing still in Kerning City. eTracer didn't pop up.
Some other guildies and allies also seemed to d/c at random (but not everyone), no-one has seen the eTracer window appear.

this has been happening to me all day, after the sixth time or so I gave up :/

Introducing eTracer - Zelkova - 2010-10-27

Dced at random while riding the airplane to kerning.

Introducing eTracer - sicnarf - 2010-10-27

Are you guys just disconnecting or is the game client closing as well? It should happen when the game client closes.

sicnarf Wrote:Are you guys just disconnecting or is the game client closing as well? It should happen when the game client closes.

My client closed.

Introducing eTracer - Zelkova - 2010-10-27

my bad. client closed ^^ not dc.

Introducing eTracer - Stereo - 2010-10-28

I've had it disconnect me every time I log on a character in a map with monsters... no sign of the etracer yet. D:

Introducing eTracer - FantaTwist - 2010-10-28

Experienced critical errors due to this (or the patch), so I'm downgrading to XP again. By the way eTracer doesn't even pop up, what the pineapple!?

Introducing eTracer - Chameleonic - 2010-10-28

Maple randomly closed down on me when I had my shop up in the fm (I suspect a dc hacker as I was around when it happened) and no eTracer popup.
