Third Generation; Sapphire in particular (perhaps I like it because it's my birthstone :p).
Sadly, my GBA's battery leaked and completely destroyed the cartridge. Noo...my Swampert and Gardevoir...
Fortunately, I transferred most of the stuff I needed over to Emerald.
I've played every single Pokemon game (handheld only) up to Emerald...and I've always wanted a game where you could visit all regions in the Pokemon World. Still...that would be final game material, wouldn't it?

I still love Gen 1. Charmander, Bulbasaur, Squirtle. Its the first game that I actually liked all 3 starters, these days I don't like half the starters or half the designs of the Pokemon.

1st gen was amazing for its time but it just can't compare the many changes that came with Gold/Silver. From vastly improved animations, improved battle/item mechanics, to giving most pokemon a gender as well as the ability to breed, to an epic storyline that spans not just Johto but to Kanto as well, it's a nostalgia trip for Gen I players of the game and has some of the best music in the series. Bike theme, gym leader/E4 battle theme, pokemon battle theme, and more gives Gen II a very strong soundtrack. I never stop getting chills down my spine as I fought the next gym leader/E4 member because I know I won't be disappointed fighting them. The DS versions of course only managed to improve on all of this and currently locks Soul Silver as my favorite Pokemon game of all time for combining the charm of Gen II and updating it with the game mechanics we all know and love from Gen III and Gen IV.
