But I do battle with my favorite teams just for the fun of it...but they are EV trained.
In fact, look at the UU thread for a bit. A lot of people there are just playing for fun. Some aren't even really into competitive battling, but they have fun joining in on battles against others. The fact that its UU also means they can use the large list of UU and NFE Pokemon without getting their asses completely handed to them. They can use their favorite Pokemon that would be more difficult to fit on an OU team.
Of course, that's not saying mixing OU and UU tier Pokemon in one team is a bad idea. I actually find mixed teams working better, since it brings an unpredictable surprise and allows for more variety. But I think I'm straying a bit too off topic now.
The point is that competitive Pokemon battles are for fun, and usually do include teams made up of Pokemon that the team builder likes.

True, but he's referring to EV training specifically for the set stats you want on your Pokemon. A majorit of Pokemon trained normally in the game end up with maxed out speed EVs, because the game LOVES throwing Zubat, Rattata, Golbat, and Raticate your way. It'd be nice if they offered a wider variety of Pokemon at least, if they're keeping the EV system the same. Fuck Giovanni for being a cheap ass and giving all his grunts the same Pokemon that the player ALREADY finds everywhere.

Giovanni: Not Onix either, looks too much like my father's penis. Just stick with Zubat and uh...I dunno, dump the rest of the Pokeballs in the toxic waste dump outside. We're bound to get some mutant Raticate and stuff.
Rocket Executive: There are also Grimer and Koffing that have been attracted by the waste as well.
Giovanni: EXCELLENT! If you'll exuse me, I'm ganna go play with my elite team of Pokemon I keep all to myself.
Most of the common Pokemon that you find in the single player game are speed givers. Well, just an example from HG/SS, but in other games your whole team will most likely end up with maxed EVs in one stat because of how common a specific Pokemon is in the game. I think the EV system really needs to be worked on.
