Essentially throwing away everything we have here to go have fun exploring isn't something most people would want to do. Most humans are pretty selfish deep down inside, one way or another. We wouldn't want to focus on what's going on out there if has nothing to do with us.

I was connecting the "don't focus on your current life, but focus on the possibility of something being out there for you if you try to reach it" state of minds together. Even if we dumped everything we had into exploring out there, we most likely won't find anything of value in our lifetime. Tons of people don't like the idea of wasting everything they have now to benefit the future generations that they'll never interact with. We're just selfish like that.
We've got good reason to be selfish as well. We want what makes us happy above all else.

Also, I agree with everything Isaac said.
Still, I think that we don't know most things about the Universe not because we are selfish, but because it's just too difficult for us to explore more than what we have already explored. Sure, we keep discovering more and more about the universe, but it's impossible for us to know if there's life outside the Earth.. it's not like we can go explore each planet and such.
Also, we currently don't know if the universe is limited or unlimited and what's out there. And I think that the mankind will never be able to know that.

The probability that were alone is so low that it would be stupid to think we are.
There are billions of galaxies and trillions of stars, which could mean an unthinkable amount of planets.
Even in the Milky-Way galaxy, there is probably life.
Therefore, were probably not alone. One day or another, we will get our proof.
Then again, it's possible we are alone, in terms of intelligent life.

I'm not suggesting either extreme, but to do what makes sense. And to most people, it makes perfect sense to study what's right here. Everyone can't be astronomers.

yet its nearly impossible for any alien to come to us. the nearest star to us is alpha centuri, which is 4.2 light years away from us. there can't be any alien living in the alpha centuri star system b/c of its 3 suns. the next closest is barnard's, which is 5.96 light years away from us. if einstein's theory is right, and if the technology of the alien have to go at the speed of light, it is still nearly impossible for them to travel to us because of the time it takes. 5.96 years of traveling nonstop. i dont think its possible for a spacecraft to travel long distances with an efficient supply unless they shoot their planet (their own perfect spacecraft) to us.
