I am lagging so hard now that it takes me like 10 seconds for the NPC chat window to pop-up after I select the quest. Then, I must log out for me to actually accept the quest, and it just continues.

Apparantly there's some sort of glitch involving transform potions and the follow system that causes everyone else on the map to d/c with an invalid pointer.
Might be causing some of the d/c's mentioned above.

Edit: didn't work. Transforming into a penguin didn't do anything.

A little trick i learned is that if you use the Task Manager and click on the Maplestory Process, set it to Above Normal Priority, It crashes less often. This doesnt save you from invalid pointer crashes but it does help if you run out of memory because it will allocate more before crashing, and might give you enough time ot make it back.

Seems to just be SP, there are a few server status checkers and the one here is the only one that appears to be down.
