Need help picking computer parts or a new computer? Click here. - Tristan - 2012-08-16 What is your current budget?: $500-600ish What part are you looking for? Why do you need it?: Well I am pretty much looking to build a whole computer suited to play Arma 3, DayZ (when that comes out standalone), Battlefield 3, Call of Duty, Valve games, stuff like that. I need it because my laptop is annoying as crap. What parts are in your current computer? Be as specific as possible. Links to Newegg/Tigerdirect are best. If you have a pre-built, include the make and model. ASUS K53SV-XR1 How do you intend to use this new part or new computer? What's the heaviest load it's likely to encounter? Heaviest load it will encounter? Either Battlefield 3, Starcraft 2, or rendering something out in Sony Vegas Pro. I intend to use it for mostly gaming and video editing, as my lappy can pretty much do everything else. Alright so it's obvious I want to build a PC, but I have really no idea where to start. But here are the specifics. Optical Drive - CD/DVD Read/Write/Burn CPU Core i7 PREFERRED but I hear i5s are pretty good too. I currently have an i7 and I love it ^_^ Definitely 2.5ghz or above... or near there. Motherboard - Anything that fits a Core i7... again n00b here don't remember the socket size. Must have PCI E x 32 or whatever the standard is... for my graphics. Maybe stick a sound card in there? Graphics Card(s?) - NVIDIA. I know by the time I will have the money for this PC they will be much cheaper than they are right now, but still. Direct X11 is a must. Networking - 802.11n WIFI... PSU - I HAVE NO IDEA - PLEASE GUIDE ME RAM - 8 Gigabytes, probably 2 4 gig sticks? Any brand really, preferably a fast clock... I think 1339 or something like that is the average? N00b over here O_o HDD - 1 Terabyte? 7300 RPM is a must, or even those crazy faster ones... I can skimp on storage for faster speeds. I don't really use more than 300-400 gigabytes anyways usually so storage isn't a must for me like it is for some people, but it would be very, VERY nice. OS - Windows 7 - 64 Bit Home Prem. or w/e is cheapest Case - No clue. Whatevers cheap and big enough, with enough space for a fan or two. Liquid Cooling? - I have no clue how much the fluid or pumps and pipes and stuff cost so if anyone has a liquid cooled PC and could enlighten me on the subject, that would be cool. The only things cooled with liquid would be the CPU and GPU if I'm correct... DX n00b ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I definitely do not have the money for this right now, but odds are near christmas time I will have the cash, but I just want to get prepared. So... guide me DX I have no idea what to look for or what to get... what NOT to look for, etc. etc. As long as it can run battlefield 3 on mid-high settings I would be happy with it. Basically, just get me started. What do I do now o_O Need help picking computer parts or a new computer? Just use the on-board lan cable connection Case - Antec One - 45 euro PSU - XFX Pro 550W - 60 euro HDD - Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003, 1TB - 75 euro Optical Drive - LG GH24NS90 Black - 15 euro OS - Windows 7 - 64 Bit Professional - 130 euro (Hardly a price difference with Home these days) Totals: Cheap Power: 930 euro High Power: 1230 euro But if you're looking for 500 euro max... don't expect anything that can play Battlefield 3 smoothly... I found it with some digging.* So I this build I plan on going with as soon as I get back tot he states ( I saved up!)

Any suggestions? I plan on overclocking. Things I don't plan on changing:

Christmas sales too...Well, prices will drop, sure, but not THAT much, maybe 100 dollar less for the same this Christmas, so don't expect miracles. But it's just the question of what you WANT to get. You -can- make a cheap game pc for 500 dollar, but you will hate yourself for spending the 500 dollars on it within a year, because you have to upgrade everything AGAIN next summer. You can also keep in mind that the next gen consoles will come out in summer ~ christmas 2013 with full hd and all new eye candy, maybe that is a better investment if you want a good "game pc". You will never have to upgrade your console again for the coming 5 years (that will be 2018 by then) and keep playing games smoothly without having to worry about your PC hardware. For Maplestory, you can even leave out a videocard, because the new Core i5 and i7 onboard GPU is quite ok for 2d gaming. But if you're really into smooth PC 3D gaming, yeah, new (good) hardware will cost you a lot of money. Hmm...I like the idea of IPS monitors but they aren't made for gaming, and my build is mostly for gaming. They still have high input lag and high response times as well as that "glow" when showing blacks. And they ghost. Yes, their colors are badass which makes them better for photo editing, etc. Believe it or not I got some crazy vision and can notice input lag/ghosting like a beast. I don't really care about insane color reproduction or AMAZING viewing angles since I'll be sitting in front of my monitor. I want to go with 120hz and their colors and viewing angles are good enough for me. Can anyone recommend me a good 120hz monitor? I don't want IPS. I'm a gamer not a designer. I care more about FPS than I do color reproduction. Need help picking computer parts or a new computer? I want to go with 120hz and their colors and viewing angles are good enough for me.Haha, I'm a hardcore FPS gamer (for more then 15 years now) and I can tell you, the new (more expensive, 350+ dollars) IPS monitors are absolutely suited for gaming (no ghosting, tearing, low response times, no input lag), especially when they're designed for gaming like the Eizo Foris 2332 (and upcoming 2333) which are both IPS monitors designed for gaming. About you hating the "glow" of IPS monitors in blacks, really, if you notice THAT, you'll hate the TN panels even more because with TN imagine having colorshift-glows on red, green, blue and white as well because of the color shifting at the edges of the screen when you're sitting in front of it because of the terrible viewing angles... I'm just warning you, TN isn't just "bad" on color reproduction and viewing angles, it's just plain terrible and worse then you think. But if you want to go 120hz, I won't stop you. Just don't expect to view photo's / browse the web with it, because you'll think your eyes are malfunctioning... it's that terrible... That's why I returned mine... ![]() You can always go for 2 monitors, one TN Panel for 120hz gaming and one IPS Panel for browsing the web, without having a free LSD trip... xD Need help picking computer parts or a new computer? IPS and a 120hz will be pricey. Probably $1K+. I'll stick to a 120hz and then grab an IPS in the future. Besides I've been gaming on my Sager's monitor, so ANYTHING is better than a laptop screen. Ty for the input!

I actually think my laptop screen looks pretty damn good. A lot of TN panels I've seen are way better than my Sager's screen so either way I look at it, it's an upgrade. I just can't justify using an IPS other than for the superb color reproduction needed by certain tasks. Plus Laptop IPS screens are just horrible for gaming. Why do you need it?: I want a brand new spanking new laptop for college. Windows 7, preferably. What parts are in your current computer? Be as specific as possible. Links to Newegg/Tigerdirect are best. If you have a pre-built, include the make and model. N/A How do you intend to use this new part or new computer? What's the heaviest load it's likely to encounter? I'm going to use this computer for programming in college, and gaming of course. I do not care about how much it weights (the laptop I own right now is probably going to be heavier than this new one). The heaviest workload is probably Battlefield 3 on max settings, but I don't exactly need to run Battlefield 3 on max settings. I would like to run Guild Wars 2 and other FPS, like TF2 and such, on max settings, though. I have a relatively large budget, and I get student discounts on HP and Dells. I would like a monster of a laptop with like uber specs that can last me like 4 years, though. I've been looking at the HP Envys, but the graphics card is a turn-off =/. Of course if you guys are proponents of Windows 8, I would like to hear your arguments. Need help picking computer parts or a new computer? As for the "metro" look, you can always just go into "desktop" mode. As for laptops, I'm not sure how they will cope with max settings for games. You could always get a cheap $300 laptop just for programming and a $1000 desktop at home. Need help picking computer parts or a new computer? Trust me, it will do you much better in the long run than a laptop. My suggestion to you is if you're going to put that much money into a computer, put about 1200 or so into a nice tower, and then put the rest of the money into a laptop that is reliable for your school work (prob about 300-400 bucks). Reason being said, laptops can overheat over time, and the parts are much harder to replace when they become old. Not to mention the labor cost to repair a laptop is much higher on these things. Need help picking computer parts or a new computer? I'd rather lug a nice brick beast of a laptop rather than a desktop or something. I don't have to worry about overheating. I haven't cleaned my fan on this HP laptop out of sheer laziness, and I'm quite frankly okay with it. I followed Ray's suggestion and started looking at ASUS computers, then came onto this beauty http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-G75VW-AS71-17-3-Inch-Laptop-Black/dp/B007MW73C2/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top Only complaints I see is that the power cord and the laptop are both bricks, but I think I can deal with that, especially since the laptop I have right now is probably heavier. I'm probably going to get this one instead of Ray's because it's cheaper, plus it has a bigger screen xD. Thanks for the input. Need help picking computer parts or a new computer?
