Well, then Bulbasaur is the only Pokemon that doesn't follow the earlier mentioned rule.
Now that i'm thinking about it, it is kinda weird and I don't really remember paying attention to Dual Types in Gen I either. Then again I was a stupid little kid at the time.
Speaking of Parasect, did you guys know that Paras and Parasect are the only pokemon in the series to have an 5x type weakness? with the Dry Skin ability they take 2x from Fire for being Grass, 4x from being Bug and then it is increased because of the ability.
I find bits of trivia like that really interesting, I often browse Bulbapedia to see the ideas behind certain pokemon and where they originated from.
EDIT: 5x, not 8x, woops. I think 5x is the cap.

Parasect for example, it's type is Bug/Grass but Parasect sounds more appropriate to be Bug/Dark or something because of the nature of its parasite's hive mind. They could add an option where Paras/Parasect in the wild could either be Bug/Grass or Bug/Dark, also depending on the location/time of day it's caught.

Also, options for rare-ass Magikarp with the secondary Dragon typing which makes it evolve at a later level but result in a Water/Dragon Gyarados. :>
They could even mystery gift them, like a fire/dragon charizard

Did you know that...
Empoleon is the only starter Pokémon that loses both its weakness and resistance against the initial types of the other two starter Pokémon in its final evolution, having no weakness or resistance against Grass and Fire attacks?
Also, Empoleon has the most resistances of any starter Pokemon, with 10 Resistances and 1 Immunity. It was also the 3rd most resistant Pokemon in its Generation.
Essentially....Empoleon is OP as fk, especially for a Starter Pokemon.

Back on-topic, I think that varying sub-types is a neat idea, but with as many Pokémon as there are, it seems like it would be too much of a hassle for the player to deal with in all honesty. Not to mention that not only would breeding have to be done for nature, moves, etc, but breeding for the right type as well? And let's not even touch the implications that would mean for the competitive scene. I honestly can't see a valid reason to justify that mechanic in my opinion at least.

if it was easily controllable (i.e: hatch the eggs during the nighttime) i wouldn't mind it at all, and would certainly add another layer to the game.

It doesn't necessarily need to be as complicated as it sounds. For example, the typing could be passed down by the father along with moves and other anomalies. (Bug/Dark Parasect male mated with Bug/Grass Parasect female would produce Bug/Dark Paras)
This would be huge for both in-game and metagame players and it would give a lot more viability for a lot of Pokemon that are typically not well regarded.
Bunch of possibilities would include:
Water/Steel Blastoise (Seriously, it has motherfucking iron cannons)
Fire/Dark or Fire/Psychic Ninetales (To play on its mischievous or spiritual relationship to mythology)
Fighting/Flying Farfetch'd (Samurai Duck COME ON)
Bug/Fighting Ledian (Dem punches)
Psychic/Dark Girafarig (More prevalent hind head)
And my favorite, MOTHERFUCKING BUG/PSYCHIC BUTTERFREE.

Gyarados is Flying secondary and not Dragon strictly for balance reasons.
Gyarados with Water/Dragon would only be weak to dragon, this would have been a big problem in Gen 1(lolgen1) when the only dragon type move was Dragon Rage, effectively making Gyarados have no weaknesses (if he was Dragon/water).
Besides that: We already have extremely overpowered Water/Dragon type (Palkia) and an extremely Mediocre Water /dragon type (Kingdra). I'm not convinced another one is needed.

Actually Psychic types were the game breakers in Gen I, even more than Dragon Types, especially the fact that Special stat is hybrid of Attack stat and Defense stat except it's "special" oriented instead of physical oriented. There are no types that resist Psychic type attack other than the Pokemon of the same type, and its only weakness is Bug. I understand Ghost types are super effectives against Psychic, but that's not the correct statement in Gen I because the only Ghost type move that does actual damage such as Lick is dead useless against Psychic since it's immune to Ghost type moves. It probably would have been the same for Dragon types since it's special oriented if there were a Dragon type move other than Dragon Rage, but still.
[MENTION=1368]Baklava[/MENTION] That would be broken IMO. The best example is a Pokemon that is Dark/Ghost type. The only way to beat a Pokemon that has no weakness with a Wonder Guard ability is according to bulbapedia...

You guys are super fixated on Gyarados being overpowered but you're also missing the point that a lot of other Pokemon who have unfortunate typing will also incrementally become powerful also. Also, examples are just examples. I'm not making the game so the examples I give are simply what -I- would like to see, not necessarily reflecting what will actually happen in the game.

So there been a lot of talk and speculation regarding the starters and their typing. Some people are saying its going to be a reverse triangle within the triangle. So to go along with the water, fire, and grass triangle it would be fighting, psychic and dark . I for one am hoping this isnt the case because people are saying that froakie would be the fighting type fennekin the pyschic type and chespin the dark type. But really I'm hoping that they either create a few new types (fingers crossed) or give each respective starter a unique typing unlike any seen before in the game. Like if froakie was water/poison i think that would be badass or if fennekin turned out to be fire ghost what a twist that would be. Anyways thats my two cents on the matter, just like the rest of you Ive been around since Gen I and i have high hopes for this games future. October couldn't be further away

I personally think that Fennekin becoming Fire/Ghost would be awesome. Ghostly fox fire and the like, they kinda went in that direction with Ninetails but stopped short of making it an honest to god Kitsune.

It would probably have a pretty interesting moveset too, being based off a trickster spirit, would likely make it the most difficult starter though.
