What Do You Guys Work As? - OB3LISK - 2011-09-16

Seeing Sarah's "business" thread and that other guy's "I can't find a job" thread I really got excited thinking about what you guys do.

Please, take the time to share what you work as and what you actually do.

 Spoiler

If you go to school only say what you're majoring in and what you hope to do.

I'll start:

----------------------

I'm going to school, currently in second year of college. I'm taking all the classes for med school, but I also am majoring in Physics so that I can get an engineering job in case the med school thing doesn't work out or if I just change my mind. Physics is really interesting to me.

I don't and never had a job, I'm an only child and my Mom and step dad cover the funding necessary. Next summer I hope to intern somewhere, not sure where, but possibly a hospital, and if not I'm not sure where. I have heard of a lot of chemistry jobs, but as I'm not majoring in chemistry it might be a problem. Physics..I'm not sure what jobs there are for it beside engineering and not sure what I could work as/intern at a low level that has to do with that sort of thing.

I'm in what would probably be called College in the US atm and i'm studying bio-chemistry/Bio-technology + maths and a few other smaller subjects.
I have absolutely no clue of what i'll be studying when i get to uni, but i'll be alright. I have great grades and everything, so i just gotta decide what subject i'll be studying @ uni.

No need for a job with SU in denmark <3

Full time student, computer science major, and temporary full time contractor, working as Market Research Survey Interviewer. I think I will run out of work by the end of this week, so I hope I'll get a part-time some time soon.

Basically, I call people at weird hours and read off a script to troll them. Payment is calculated from successful attempts and we also get bonus whenever a respondent yells over 50 dB.

I work as a chef at a restaurant, located at a golfing field.
we're going to work on molecular gastronomy when the winter period hits, so that we can present a new, fantastic menu for when spring hits.

I love it - it's my life.

I'm the tax man, aka revenue examiner 2. I handle right now:

Individual tax payers (citizens like you), Typically dumb asses who can't read the instructions or get all threatened by a letter simply stating that we have your return.

Corporation taxes (Like Nike or KFC), Typically some overpayment from the previous year was micalculated or the NOL wasn't applied correctly. (NOL is a net operating loss, essentially you can take your loss and carry it forward to nerf out the taxes you may owe, although it can't be used for 100% of your tax liability. AKA it's a "I lossed a pomegranate ton of money, I gambled I lossed, can I get compensation" Sure you can, up to 5 years back

Sales and use tax (Lots of laws in contradicting verbatim) Mainly questions of "If I sell downloadable programs is it taxable in maryland"

Withholding (Lots of withholding companies call about something called the Annual reconciliation where you give us your entire list of payments throughout the year, according to your records, and we compare it with what we actually have, typically it's wrong the first go around). Oh and "Do I have to withhold my employees taxes and how much should I?", Which legally they don't have to in the state of MD.

Alcohol, Typically questions about how to fill out the direct wine shippers permits and the prices for the licences, that or screaming at the 9% tax rate on it

Tobacco, Fortunately not a lot of questions about that, mainly on a full moon we'll get someone trying to complain about the law that you can't sell tobacco products online without a registration.

IFTA, Essentially the national licensing for trucks that weigh more than 2600lbs or have 3 axles have to have this "IFTA license" in order to legally own it/drive it. A lot of people ask for more stickers or if they are applicable for this tax.

Motor fuel, essentially gas taxes, "Do i need a license to dig a whole in the backyard and make my crude oil, and if it has 10% ethanol, is it considered mixed or pure gasoline?" Oh and you 7-11's call often asking to renew it.

Think that's it, I pretty much take all those type of phone calls, review all those types of audit's, and take in walk in's who need face to face assistance, aka a fucking picture book.

I co-produce and edit a TV program which airs in like... 6 cities? Yeah, nothing extremely special but it's fun to do as long as my partner isn't taking 7 years in editing a 2 second video. It's a fun job overall and the people I work with are fun to work with.

I wouldn't put it quite that way, but yes. And I am only in my position because I earned it. Did I get the quick route because of my personal relationship with the family? Undoubtedly. But I definitely deserve it for what I do.

Second year of college majoring in Biology for med school. The bio part is easy because I have a near perfect memory, but the phsycis and calc requirements are destroying my GPA because I transpose numbers.

Full-time student. 3rd year in computer science, graduating next year. The nearest thing that qualified as work I've ever done is helping my parent in their whole-seller shop.
