Harakiri is a type of suicide where you take a sharp object and cut a whole in your stomach. You don't just stab yourself -- you cut out a chunk of your abdominal area. That is what the guy did.

Wrong. Harakiri is "honorable suicide". Seppuku is the form of suicide in which you cut your stomach.

Wikipedia said harakiri is the term used when talking in person where seppuku is what is written on the Internet or on paper.

What I've read is that harakiri has evolved to be a way of saying suicide in general, while seppuku hasn't.
As the wiki article reads, the fact that "harakiri" has become the oral form of speech leads me to the conclusion that it's probable that now it's used to generalize different forms of suicide. Makes sense.
