Art Contest: Create Your Own Southperry Logo!! - TaliaNCo - 2010-12-06

Welcome to the first contest to ever hit the Southperry forums. In case some of you haven’t heard, I am the newest member of the Southperry team and my job will be coordinating contests and events such as this one. I am excited to have one so soon after joining the team here, and especially during the holiday season. I couldn’t think of a better time to hand out gifts to the Southperry community.

I have spent a bit of time reading through threads here and realized that many of you are very passionate about the idea of creating a new logo for Southperry. Even those of you who aren’t artistic showed great interest and support for someone to design a new logo. The entire community will have a hand in this so I hope everyone takes the time to read everything in this post. The artists, of course, will be submitting their work and the rest of the community will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite submission. Now, onto the rules…….

RULES

 The content MUST contain “Southperry.net” visibly and clearly.
 File size of submitted logo should NOT exceed 60k.
 Dimensions should be approximately 105 high and between 385 and 700 wide.
 Preferred file format is png.
 All submissions become property of southperry.net whether "winning" or not.
 No guarantee of a winner being selected. (In other words, the current logo may or may not be changed even after the contest.)
 We reserve the right to change the logo back at any time, or to use any number of the submissions at any time regardless of whether they were the grand prize winner.
ALL submissions will be PM’ed to ME and ONLY me and are NOT allowed to be posted anywhere on this forum. (I want this contest to be fair and without bias. Since I don’t really know any of you, I will be the best one to hold this information. NONE of the other MODS will know who created the artwork until the rest of you do.)
 Please refrain from handing out constructive criticism until after the contest is over. (Again, I don’t want anyone to have a clue which artwork belongs to which member.)
 If any contestant is found doing anything against the rules, they are automatically disqualified.
 Submissions must be PM’ed to me no later than 11:59 pm PST on December 19th, 2010. Late submissions will not be accepted for any reason.
 Please keep all posts in this thread ON TOPIC!
 Most importantly, HAVE FUN with it and be creative.

[I also reserve the right to modify these rules as I see fit.]

PRIZES &VOTING

Prizes are yet to be determined because it will depend on the amount of submissions I receive. For instance, if I only receive 10 submissions, I will share all 10 submissions with the MODS and they will vote to find out which 3 the community will vote on and there will only be ONE grand prize winner. If I receive 30 or more submissions, I will share all 30+ submissions with the MODS and they will vote to find out which 10 the community will vote on and there will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. I want to be fair and I also want to attract as many people as I can to this contest. The more submissions we have the more chances you have to win something.

• December 20th, 2010, I will be making a thread only the MODS can see with images with numbers beside them in a poll thread. No one’s name will be attached so the MODS will only be voting for which one they like the most.
• December 24th, 2010 @ 11:59 pm PST, the polls for the MODS will close.
• December 26th, 2010, I will put up the top artwork voted by the MODS.
• December 30th, 2010 @ 11:59 pm PST, all polls will close for good.
• December 31th, 2010 I will announce the winner/s and hand out the prize/s……..HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Feel free to ask questions either here in the thread, or via PM. I would prefer that questions mostly be posted here so questions won’t be repeated and so I won’t have to answer the same question multiple times.

AND…………GOOOOO…………………………..

That was fast.

Say I design a logo as a sketch on paper and scan it in as an entry.

If its good enough, would there be a possibility for redesigning it digitally?
I'd really like to participate, but I lack the clarity digital paintings bring.

I won't leave anything out as an option. Just because it's not digital doesn't mean it can't be a beautiful piece of work. I didn't post anything in the rules stating it HAD to be done using photoshop or the like. Smile Bring it on!!! I'm sure we can figure something out.

Yeah, I eventually grow on people..........like mold or fungus or something but it happens. Tongue

I'm excited about this. I think it's going to be a lot of fun.

Can I ask what is the reason behind narrowing down the entries before showing them to the public? To make it easier to choose a winner or something? I myself believe it would be a little better to show all the entries to the public off the bat and then go through a couple of rounds before the grand finale.

With the timeline you put up there I guess it would be easier to do it the way you said, but I was just wondering is all.

I'm wondering about this too. I find round robins to be more fair and fun. It's up to you though.

Mostly due to the timeline we're going with. When I spoke with Eos today about doing this, he told me he'd throw in a little more moolah for my budget if I did this contest by the end of 2010. So I'm trying to get everyone more of what we could all use. Smile

I see no reason why the previous suggestions can't still be done. You're still narrowing down the entries before showing the public regardless. Unless you chose to not open certain entries, there's no time wasted by just making a thread showing all entries and then showing which ones were eliminated. Unless you don't want to hurt someone's feelings, but I'm pretty sure they'd know regardless when they see their design wasn't among one of the entries.

Edit: I realize the possibility that perhaps the mods want to discuss things about the entries that they don't want the public knowing, but they can easily make one voting thread public and then have a thread in the internal mod section that discusses their votes in depth.

Also, the thought behind it was due to the fact that I did this so quickly a vast majority of the community is probably still unaware that I exist and what my purpose is. Let's say a lot of people are on hiatus for the holidays and we don't get as many votes as we'd hoped for. I would really hate to end up with a lot of "ties". Hopefully once people become aware of events, more people will participate and we won't have to worry about this issue in the future. So unless I end up with a ridiculously low number of entries, this is the way I would like to handle this first contest.

I'm still not following you.

What I mean is, make the mod voting public, so we can see all the entries. Even if we can't vote for them, it'd be nice to see which ones didn't make it. I'm not proposing the public votes for both, just saying that the mod voting thread should be in public sight for us.
I'm sure there will be quite a few joke entries that will get knocked off but would be interesting just to see.

I don't see how this suggestion in any way changes how the event is run. It just lets us see what you guys are doing behind the scenes. Everything runs unaltered.

Your burger is still being made, regardless of if the person makes the burger in front of you rather than behind the kitchen. Some people prefer to see their food prepared. By moving the burger into plain sight, you're not changing anything, just letting us see it being made.

That's the other part of the reasoning. I really don't want submissions that aren't serious and have them mocked just so people can get a good laugh out of it.

ETA: It also makes it a complete waste of time on our parts. Time is something I have to organize on a daily basis. No room for error there.

Damn. I was hoping I could see a few before trying to make one. Usually, I try to see a sampling of what people make before I can make my own version. :S

Hey.

That was not a joke entry.
